For the Trees!

Franklin's Trees by AJ Schenkman

January 17, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In July 2024 Franklin’s Trees was published. I wasn’t able to read a (online) copy until early 2025. Now, it is not a book I went WOW over, or feel that it was worth waiting for, but it is a book that is a nice book when you find it. It never really wowed me, but AJ Schenkman’s book did interest me. I was not sure what to expect, but went about it with an open mind. We know some about Franklin D. Roosevelt, but […]

The sights, sounds, smells and food of the forest

On a Mushroom Day by Chris Baker and Alexandra Finkeldey

November 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have read On a Mushroom Day by Chris Baker and Alexandra Finkeldey before (or it did feel  familiar at least). Maybe that was because I have read books about mushrooms/fungi before, so it might be a case of remembering that instead of this one. Either way, Baker’s book is a poetic story that could grab most readers. Even if you are not interested in edible (and not so edible) fungus, this is a nice book about the connection between us and nature. The child […]

Breathtaking, thoughtful

Wildful by Kengo Kurimoto

March 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was hanging out in a vehicle, waiting for the driver to come out of the grocery store. I had a few books with me and decided to pick the biggest one up (well, longest physically/horizontally) as the sun was hitting me right in the eyes and thought maybe it would block things. It mostly did, as it was (as I said) horizontal and not the usual vertical style. And what this book turned into was not just a poor woman’s sunshade, but one of […]

What do you see in me?

Tree Spirits by Louise Wannier

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I thought when I saw the title, Tree Spirits that the book would be either a story about tree spirits with animals and maybe a child or two for an environmental book; or it would be about the mythology and legends of tree spirits in a non-fiction format. It is neither. It is photographs that have hidden images. The author gives you some ideas of what they see, but you could see what you want as well. And I liked almost all of Louise Wannier […]

Trees & Rabbits

Willow and Bunny by Anitra Rowe Schulte

March 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A few reviews ago I mentioned that too sweet is peppermint patties and hot chocolate. This time, this book is not exactly that sweet, but it is close to it. Willow and Bunny has a spiritual feeling that could be too sweet for some people, and maybe not enough for others. Anitra Rowe Schulte’s story is about a bunny who “hears a voice” and follows it, trusting it will not lead them astray. And sure enough they find the Willow tree and her shelter. Over […]

Mangonificent tale

Farah Loves Mangos by Sarthak Sinha

January 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Different Countries (author is from India & his travels have taken him “from the tropical rainforests to the high Himalayas where he makes children’s books from his tiny studio.”) This book, Farah Loves Mangos, has multiple feelings, but in the end, it becomes a little bittersweet. At first it seems like a lovely story of a young girl, her mangos, and her grandfather. I assumed we would have a symbolism story where the mango tree represents the grandfather, or how the tree is the […]
