Good Enough For My Needs

May 9, 2018 by ASKReviews 4 Comments

Best for: People visiting Lisbon In a nutshell: It’s an Eyewitness Guide. They have pictures and highlights. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I’ve tended to enjoy the Eyewitness Guides in the past, and we’re going to Lisbon later this month. Review: I appreciate that these books start with some history of the area that they cover. I have basically no knowledge of Portugal, other than that when I look at a map of Europe, it looks like a face to Spain’s hair. Now […]

Eat, Pray, England

April 8, 2018 by tillie 6 Comments

The free books of England continue to get me in trouble. Perusing the racks of the book-exchange sections in my Tescos is such an easy commitment. It’s free books! There are no fees, you don’t have to return them. They can sit for ages on your bookshelf. You can even pick up the ridiculous overrated piece of white girl trash just to mock it and laugh and say “I am so much better than that!” I am not better than that. Eat, Pray, Love is […]

Lots of Saxon Names

March 11, 2018 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

Best for: Anyone who likes a little trivia about place names. In a nutshell: Author Hilliam provides the history of the name of every station on the London Underground Worth quoting: “Interestingly, our word ‘book’ also comes from this Saxon word (boc hyrst) for a beech tree. Even before books as we know them were invented, wooden writing tablets were made of thin slices of beech wood, on which letters known as runes could be scratched. These, of course, were pieces of boc.” Why I […]

Probably Helpful But Not Great

February 26, 2018 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who like Time Out guides, I’m guessing. In a nutshell: Mostly your standard travel guide, but with really tiny print. Worth quoting: Not so much a quote, but apparently the women didn’t get the vote in Belgium didn’t get it until 1949? Why I chose it: We’re going to Brussels this weekend, and this looked to be one of the better options for guidebooks at the shop I went to. Review: I don’t think I’ve ever purchased a Time Out guide, and […]

Romania for the Weekend? Sure.

February 18, 2018 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People living in the UK looking for ideas of places to visit in Europe In a nutshell: Snapshots of locals across Europe, including a few cities that might not be top of mind. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: Looking for ideas for quick breaks away from London. Review: When I popped over to Amazon to grab the link for this review, I saw it had a very low rating (two 1-star and two 2-star reviews). I can see being disappointed, but […]

Some Guidance On Where to Go in My New Country

February 14, 2018 by ASKReviews 4 Comments

Best for: People new to the UK, ideally with access to a car In a nutshell: Guidebook with ideas for 52 weekend getaways in England, Scotland, and Wales, organized by best time of year to go. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: London is awesome, but there’s a lot more to see around here. Review: Generally speaking I like this book. It suggests quite a few places that I’ve never heard of or would not have thought to go to. Each section is only […]
