A delightfully modern 19th century novel

Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas by Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis

October 25, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Green BINGO (diagonal): Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Violet Note: I read the version translated by Margaret Jull Costa and Robin Patterson, published in 2020.  When you open a book and find that it is dedicated to “the first worm to gnaw the cold flesh of my corpse,” you know it isn’t going to be your run-of-the-mill novel. I might not find that so unusual (I do enjoy my share of darkly humorous authors), though, if this novel hadn’t been originally published in 1881. […]

Expanding Horizons

The Murmur of Bees by Sofia Segovia (Author), Simon Bruni (Translator)

September 18, 2019 by KatSings Leave a Comment

Bingo Update: This is for my History/Schmistory square. The book is, according to the publisher, “set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution and the devastating influenza of 1918.” I learned SO MUCH about Mexican history reading this book, even if it is a work of fiction. Every now and then a monolith that should be seen as evil does something good, even Amazon (who we appreciate for our buyhole, obviously). Amazon sent out a list of books they were offering for free for World […]

Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…

Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life by by Ulli Lust, translated by Kim Thompson

February 3, 2019 by pluiedenovembre Leave a Comment

TG: drug use, sexual assault, violence against women, mafia I’m not really sure I know how to review this book, but I am going to try anyway. Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life is a graphic novel memoir that narrates a specific period in the life of its author. In 1984, shortly before her 17th birthday, Ulli Lust, a rebellious punk girl from Vienna, took off on a hitchhiking trip across Italy with her friend Edi with nothing but a […]

Life is a long quiet river…

La brocante Nakano (The Nakano Thrift Shop) by Hiromi Kawakami (translated by Elisabeth Suetsugu)

January 27, 2019 by pluiedenovembre Leave a Comment

This is the second book by Hiromi Kawakami I have read and even though I don’t remember many details about the first one, it apparently was enjoyable enough that I bought three other books by her… I hope the other two are more to my liking because this one was a struggle. I enjoyed the writing. The story was very slow but that doesn’t bother me as a rule. I just found every single character to be extremely uninteresting. Even the not particularly nice ones. […]

El fruto prohibido (Fruit of Knowledge) by Liv Strömquist, translated by Alba Pagán

January 27, 2019 by pluiedenovembre Leave a Comment

(published in English as: Fruit of Knowledge: The Vulva vs the Patriarchy) I was talking to a friend about how difficult it can be to find graphic novels written and/or illustrated by women. She mentioned this Swedish author she enjoyed but wasn’t sure if she had been translated. Fortunately, she has been translated and I found this gem on Google Play Books. What an amazing read. El fruto prohibido (literally The Forbidden Fruit) is a cultural history of the vulva, and it’s both hilarious and […]

I’m just a soul whose intentions are good…

The Delinquent Housewife! 1 by Nemu Yoko (translated by David Musto)

January 16, 2019 by pluiedenovembre 1 Comment

Komugi and Tohru are young newlyweds (or about to get married? I’m not entirely sure) who move in with his family while they find their own place. Tohru’s family – mom, grandpa, brother Dai and sister Yukari – are warm and welcoming (except Yukari) and eager to make Komugi feel like part of the family. For her part, Komugi is sweet and helpful and just generally delighted to be part of the family. Just as everyone is starting to get comfortable with the new living […]
