A beautiful murmur

The Murmur of Bees by Sofia Segovia

October 24, 2019 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I bought this book, put it on my kindle, and then forgot about it.  I don’t know why I bought it–I’m sure it was someone’s recommendation, or a list of new books somewhere.  One day I found it again and started reading, having no idea what the book was about. This book was enchanting. Set in early 20th century Mexico, this is the meandering story of the Morales family and their adopted son Simonopio, who was found by old Nana Reja under a bridge, with […]

Underwhelming, hopefully the Netflix show is better.

The Last Wish (The Witcher, #1) by Andzrej Sapkowski

June 26, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I had this already on my TBR before they announced the Netflix adaptation, but it wasn’t a huge priority. I figured I would get to it eventually, along with all the other fantasy series I’ve got on there (which I feel like is all of them). But I did want to check it out when I heard about the show, because I do like to try when possible to have read at least the first couple of books in a series before watching an adaptation. […]

Very skeptical going in to this, but I quite enjoyed myself. Thanks, Read Harder!

Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1 by Ichigo Takano

This wasn’t my first manga, but it was the first I enjoyed. I tried Sailor Moon years ago, and was super not into it. In hindsight, I may have been unfair to it, and being unfamiliar with the conventions of manga and anime probably contributed, but still. Not a fan. But I was into this right away! I probably wouldn’t have ever picked it up, despite several friends having read and enjoyed it, except for the Read Harder Challenge this year (thanks Read Harder, doing […]

New translation of a 2,000 plus year old classic. #CBRBingo

September 5, 2018 by narfna 8 Comments

I first read The Odyssey when I was a freshman in high school. I think it might actually have been the very first assigned reading that year, and I remember being excited for it, and liking the story, but having suuuuuch a hard time getting through it, because the translation I was reading was so dense. Looking back (and now having read this translation) I don’t actually think I liked it as much as I thought I did, and I have some definite opinions about […]

A disappointing middle book, built around some really neat stuff.

Oh, man. Okay. What a weird book. (Spoilers for book one ahoy.) So the Trisolarans are coming, man! They’re coming! And humanity has four centuries to prepare. Particles called sophons are monitoring everything on Earth (all communication, written, spoken), and locking down technological and scientific advancement in order to cripple humanity in advance of their invasion. The only place safe from Trisolaran view is the individual human mind. Thus the Wallfacer Project is born. Four men (seriously, no ladies?) are chosen, and given almost unlimited […]

I liked this book way more than I thought I would.

I’m such a sucker. Two books in a row have turned me into a dripping snot monster. Well, to be fair, I think I cried harder at this one than I otherwise would have because I’d cried so hard at Code Name Verity the day before. I was all prepped to be emotional; all my systems were primed. At least this was a happy cry. Way better than that ‘OH MY GOD THIS IS SO SAD MY HEART IS DYING’ crying I did on that […]
