Really tough to read right now, in the aftermath of another shooting

There There by Tommy Orange

July 6, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

First,  huge trigger warning, especially right now, as we go through the aftermath of yet ANOTHER SHOOTING at what we should expect to be a peaceful gathering – this novel crescendos towards a shooting at a Powwow in Oakland, CA. The events that precede the shooting are the main thrust of the novel, and the final section contains descriptions of the event itself and brief content about its aftermath. I’d say maybe it isn’t for right now but honestly, when are we not reeling from […]

So Many Experiences and Stories All Tied into One

There There by Tommy Orange

June 9, 2021 by Lisa Bee 5 Comments

This novel ended up on my to-read list last year after it was a Cannonball featured review. I can definitely understand why so many have spoken so highly of it, and am sure this won’t be the last we hear of Tommy Orange in the years to come. While presented as one complete novel of converging stories, There There reads almost like a collection of short stories, with different threads connecting each of the characters: that is, until everything comes to a head at the […]

“They took everything and ground it down to dust as fine as gunpowder, they fired their guns into the air in victory and the strays flew out into the nothingness of histories written wrong and meant to be forgotten. Stray bullets and consequences are landing on our unsuspecting bodies even now.” #CBRBingo – Orange

I have complained about literary fiction before, and I will complain about it again. But this book is a great example of the genre, in part because Tommy Orange is so good at his craft (this is a debut!!), but I think also because he is an author that provides a voice that is marginalized. He has things to say. The book itself is seeking (in part) to reckon with the idea of the modern Indian, the Urban Indian, and it does so with not […]

An unattended wound gets infected

There There by Tommy Orange

CBR11 BINGO: Own Voices and HALF CANNONBALL! There are so many books out there that could easily be great candidates for the CBR Bingo “Own Voices” square. As a white, female reader, I know that I tend to gravitate towards novels about and by white, and often female, authors. I don’t have to scroll through my GoodReads to know that. While I do read across a wide range of genres, I am trying to make more of an effort to seek out books by other […]

Strong Debut

There There by Tommy Orange

June 8, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

There are people who wonder why the need for diverse books exists. Sometimes they can admit that there are not enough minorities in works of fiction, but that is usually followed by something along the lines of “minorities should write them then”. Combine that with the issue of approbation and these same people then add something like “why should white men write about other groups when they always combine it is wrong”. Of course, that is the answer to the question itself. But a book […]

There, There – Good, but bleak, debut novel

There There by Tommy Orange

May 1, 2019 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I learned of this new (summer 2018) book in a recent podcast episode of Literary Disco, but it has made an impression having received props (technical term) from a bajillion publications, such as The Washington Post, NPR, Time, O, The Oprah Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, Entertainment Weekly, The Boston Globe, GQ, The Dallas Morning News, Buzzfeed, BookPage, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews. Suffice it to say, Mr Orange was on a lot of lists for his debut novel. I found it to be a little […]
