Feloniously, Willfully, and [with] Malice Afterthought

The Greatest True Crime Stories Ever Told by Tom McCarthy

August 7, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Free! I was happy to receive my first free book through NetGalley. The review that follows was not influenced by any obligation to them. The Greatest True Crime Stories Ever Told, edited by Tom McCarthy, is an easy-to-read compilation of true crime stories, some dating back as far as the 1800s. I’ve read a lot of true crime, so some of the stories were familiar, but there were others that were new to me. Each chapter is written by a different author. […]

I recall reading, in The New York Review of Books, a couple of years ago, an article that jellyfish were taking over the planet.

Typewriters Bombs Jellyfish by Tom McCarthy

February 5, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is a collection of essays by the novelist Tom McCarthy, not the filmmaker and actor Tom McCarthy. I have previously read his novels Remainder, which I absolutely loved, and Satin Island, which I was lukewarm about in general. This collection is a kind of odds and ends collection, not either a focused effort in terms of theme or time period. The timeframe of the whole collection is an oddly situated 15 years from about 2002 to 2016. That time period involved a lot of discussion of […]

The middle of a novel is a state of mind. Strange things happen in it. Time collapses.

Changing My Mind – 4/5 Stars So this post is a compendium of reviews based initially on my reading of this, Zadie Smith’s early collection of essays. These essays are not part of an intentional collection and represent a set number of years of nonfiction writing projects for Smith. The best of them are the reviews, including and sometimes especially her movie reviews, longform journalism (which is the least interesting, if not impactful writing in the book), writing about writing, and writing about her father. […]

A Self-Indulgent Mess

January 11, 2016 by expandingbookshelf Leave a Comment

What an utter waste of time. Tom McCarthy is fast becoming the Kate Winslet of the literary world-so much of his work is exceptional, so now they nominate him based on the assumption that this book is good too (Yeah, Winslet, I’m coming for you. Nice accent in Steve Jobs)   I picked up McCarthy’s Satin Island because it was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. There’s only been a few times where I profoundly disliked a book that received that honor, but this is […]

As a sidenote, I am now a Time Lord!

March 21, 2015 by bonnie 17 Comments

First things first: a little shameless self-promotion. I’m a doctor now!!!!!! I passed my dissertation defense on Wednesday. It was a rigorous experience, but I am incredibly glad to have gone through it. I’m excited about getting my work ready for publication, and even more excited that I never have to defend my dissertation again. And apparently, my institution secretly makes you a Time Lord when you earn a PhD–the elevators by the conference room I was in would begin to randomly open after I […]
