The perfect book for a new year

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

January 5, 2021 by lowercasesee 5 Comments

First off, apologies I fell off the grid last year but my one and only New Year’s resolution was to get back to writing these reviews for the books I read. I really appreciate this community and the thoughtful conversations about books, plus the reviews give me my own personal cliff notes on everything I read. But y’all, I’m back with a banger. I almost worry that nothing else I read in 2021 will be up to the same standard as The House In The Cerulean […]

Three books I loved and one I most certainly did not.

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

The Mall by Megan McCafferty

More quick reviews as the 2020 deadline approaches…and yes, I’ll be including blurbs because I read some of these MONTHS ago. The books I loved: First off, The Overdue Life of Amy Byler. Blurb: Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City. Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets […]

“He hoped he wouldn’t need to flee anything terrible.”

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

I am a grinch with a lump of coal heart. I don’t much like kids, or love stories, or books or movies that try to warm my heart. I avoid YA. AND YET. This book had me teary-eyed and worried several times throughout, and then trying not to wake my husband with my sniffles at the end. My heart, it is warmed. UGH. Usually books about magical children and/or orphans are centered around the children. This story takes the interesting approach of showing us the […]

A Magical Island for Special Children

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

July 4, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: I wish … (I wish I could be on a beautiful secluded island during social distancing and also have magical powers) I had been seeing a lot of positive buzz around this novel, and naturally, I was curious about a story with supernatural children.  When Gail Carriger used it as part of a Queer Reads Instagram challenge, I realized it would be a perfect addition to my June reading to at least acknowledge Pride month. In many ways, Linus Baker is a familiar […]
