The Kreutzer Sonata – 4/5 Stars This is a strange murder story by Leo Tolstoy in which we find a man who murdered his wife for having an affair (having caught her in the act) and then in acquitted. I am not spoiling this story for you at all because all of this is told to you in the first few pages. But what comes out of this telling is more about the nature of his crime and how he found himself in the position […]

The Force Needs Five More Minutes

Dark Force Rising by Timothy Zahn

January 18, 2020 by Jake 1 Comment

After the crushing disappointment that is the experience of Rise of Skywalker*, I knew I needed to connect with some sort of Star Wars project that would hit my nostalgia spot. And it had to be something besides the series, which I’ve seen hundreds of times. A few years ago, after seeing (and loving) The Force Awakens, I decided to dip into the expanded universe with the OG of the franchise: the Thrawn trilogy. I had read some of the books years ago but didn’t remember much. I liked Heir […]

Ugh! There’s Anakin in my Thrawn

Thrawn: Alliances (Star Wars) by Timothy Zahn

May 30, 2019 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I enjoyed Star Wars: Thrawn very much and was looking forward to Thrawn: Alliances. I was dismayed when I discovered that the book splits it’s time between Thrawn’s partnership with Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, and Thrawn’s reluctant partnership with Darth Vader. Ugh. I dislike Anakin Skywalker so much, and not because he becomes Darth Vader. He is whiny, angry, and too certain of himself. I find him tiresome. I side-eye Padme Amidala too, because what on earth does she see in this murderous, mopey asshole? […]

For if one is remembered by a friend, one is never truly gone.

Star Wars: Thrawn by Timothy Zahn

Happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth Be With You. I did not get into the Star Wars extended universe before LucasFilm was bought by Disney. By the time I started reading Star Wars books, a couple of decades worth of material had been labeled as non-canonical. Now there’s a new canon of expanded Star Wars stories. Disney decided to ask Timothy Zahn to bring his popular character, Grand Admiral Thrawn from the old Legends into the new canon with Star Wars: Thrawn. Based on […]

Timothy Zahn is back, y’all. And, damn, he gives good villain.

It is quickly coming to the point once again, as it did for me in the early 2000s, where it is simply not feasible for me to read every new canon Star Wars book that comes out. For a while there I was keeping up, but I feel I must concede defeat earlier than my younger self might have: there are too many, and I am too old for all of this. I shall read the ones that my people say are must-reads and I […]

Satisfying series ender, but not as good as I remembered.

This definitely wasn’t as good as I remember it being, which is sad. But it was still good! It’s just, I remember swooning pretty hard during the scene where Luke and Mara Jade finally confess their love. I remember it being epic, and significant (both in terms of importance and length). And reading that scene again, it didn’t feel either of those things. I guess I was bringing the swoon myself last time, which makes sense. I was very practiced at doing that in the […]
