I Didn’t Think Things Were This Bad. Then I Read This.

On Tyranny Graphic Edition: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder

January 15, 2022 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

On Tyranny Graphic Edition: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder My rating: 5 of 5 stars “On Tyranny” is the graphic novel adaptation of Timothy Snyder’s “On Tyranny” nonfiction text. There’s twenty lessons using examples from the Nazi, Soviet, and communist tyrannies of the twentieth century. These lessons are meant as both warning and action plans. I appreciated that it wasn’t just warnings because that just creates fear. Having the action plans in each lesson makes that anxiety manageable and makes the […]

Our Malady – Timothy Snyder (2020)

Our Malady by Timothy Snyder

April 15, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Using the double meaning of malady, or more so both the figurative and literal meanings of illness and societal ill, Timothy Snyder walks us through a truly depressing breakdown of the failures of the US as a state, especially as illustrated by the response to the pandemic. Admitted to a series of different hospitals in December of 2019 with liver issues, Timothy Snyder got firsthand reminders of the brokenness of the for-profit US healthcare system a few months before that systemwide failure would be front […]

“Post- truth is Pre- Fascism”

October 28, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

This is a timely read and, while some of the broader points Snyder made have begun to blur a week after reading, his use of pointing out the past’s mistakes in order to inspire a more present involvement in the political climate of today is very impactful. Several quotes I bookmarked will have to do a the job of explaining why this is an excellent read for the more politically mindful Cannonballer. “Set a good example of what America means for the generations to come. […]

Stand Up. Fight Back.

August 18, 2017 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who see what is happening in the U.S. and want some quick tips on how to fight back. In a nutshell: The subtitle says it all. Twenty lessons the guide our fight against the encroaching tyranny. Line that sticks with me: “When exactly was the ‘again’ in the president’s slogan ‘Make America great again’? Hint: It is the same ‘again’ that we find in ‘Never again.’” (p 123) Why I chose it: I was in a bookstore on Tuesday and saw this […]

A Primer for Public Citizenship

March 22, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I read this in about an hour or so. It’s 20 lessons drawn from analyzing authoritarian regimes from the 20th century. As a small start on a bigger issue, it does a pretty good job of getting at the heart of the issues. Some patterns to recognize, some behaviors and positions to adopt, and some ways of being. The lessons range from understanding the purposes of a cultivated private life to how language does matter in both its preciseness but it in its uniqueness in […]
