You know the cliche about history…

A Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan

April 24, 2025 by Unpainted Huffhines Leave a Comment

Yeah, the one about not knowing it and being doomed to repeat it? Well, here’s exhibit number bajillion, Timothy Egan’s A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them. This likely sounds familiar to you: a man of ill repute, shady origin, and gross appetites seeks to capitalize on the population’s racist and xenophobic impulses by becoming the head of a large organization; along the way he makes a lot of money by extorting […]

Why do we put these horrible people in positions of power?

A Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan

December 16, 2024 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I read The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan about the American Dust Bowl many years ago, but it has stuck with me. I learned a lot, and I was very impressed by the writing. So when I saw A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Egan on NPR’s 2023 Books We Love, I knew I was going to read it. This book was very well written and eye-opening in many ways. I, of course, knew […]

A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Timothy Egan

A Fever in the Heartland is the third book I’ve read by Timothy Egan. In The Immortal Irishman, he told the fascinating story of Thomas Meager, an Irish revolutionary turned general in the American Civil War. In Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher, he told the equally fascinating story of Edward Curtis, a photographer who spent decades compiling a pictorial record of the continent’s indigenous peoples. His latest work is very different, and though it is an important and sadly relevant story, “fascinating” is probably […]

Smokey the Bear was Wrong

The Big Burn by Timothy Egan

March 25, 2023 by reginadelmar 4 Comments

The Great Fire of 1910 burned 3 million acres in Western Montana, Northern Idaho, parts of Washington and British Columbia. The fire burned in  newly created national forests including the Bitterrroot, Coeur d’Alene, Kootenai and Lolo. Timothy Egan tells the story of the fire and the larger story of the creation of public lands through the efforts of Teddy Roosevelt, forester Gifford Pinchot and John Muir. The politics of resource conservation and the role of fire are certainly relevant now, particularly with the additional complexities […]

A Life’s Work

Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher by Timothy Egan

April 25, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Shortly after taking up photography during a long convalescence, Edward S. Curtis of Seattle established himself as that city’s premier portrait taker. All the best families in the area wanted a Curtis family photograph, and he easily could have spent the rest of his days in ease and wealth. But the germ of an idea took root in Curtis’s mind and would not let him rest. After taking a picture of the city’s last Native resident, the so-called “Princess Angeline,” granddaughter of Chief Seattle, Curtis […]
