“And, as always happens, and happens far too soon, the strange and wonderful becomes a memory and a memory becomes a dream. Tomorrow it’s gone.”

Wintersmith (Tiffany Aching, #3) by Terry Pratchett

I’ve been wrestling back and forth over whether I want to give this five stars or not, but I think for now I’m going with four because this took me longer to read than I would have liked, and it’s not sticking with me as fully as book two has. Maybe on re-read I will bump it up. Anyway, this is book three in the Tiffany Aching subseries of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, and as usual, was a jolly good time with sneakly affecting undertones. There […]

A real witch is the best kind of person

A Hat Full of Sky: A Tiffany Aching Adventure by Terry Pratchett

April 17, 2023 by ElCicco 1 Comment

This is the second book of Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series. Tiffany is a young witch living on “the Chalk,” a land full of sheep and the fairies known as the Nac Mac Feegle (NMF), or Wee Free Men. In book one, 9-year-old Tiffany teamed up with the NMF to save her brother and the world from the queen of the fairies. Her witchly abilities were evident to other witches like Miss Tick and Mistress Weatherwax, who gifted Tiffany a hat. A witch’s hat is […]

The good ass-kicking shepherd

The Wee Free Men: A Tiffany Aching Adventure by Terry Pratchett

January 10, 2023 by ElCicco 7 Comments

In a discussion somewhere back in CBR14, someone mentioned Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series, which sounded fun, and I wish I could remember who brought it up (Narfna? EDIT: Yes! it was Narfna, just found it!) because I’d like to say thanks. This was a delightful read, as Pratchett stories tend to be. I love this one because the protagonist is a nine-year-old girl, a witch in the making, who is smart, practical and no-nonsense but still a child with much to learn. As usual, […]

“There’s always a story. It’s all stories, really. The sun coming up every day is a story. Everything’s got a story in it. Change the story, change the world.”

A Hat Full of Sky (Discworld, #32; Tiffany Aching, #2) by Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett was so good. With this review, I shall continue my biannual tradition of being unable to write coherently about a five-star Discworld book. This is the second Tiffany Aching book, which is set in the Discworld with his adult books, but this is technically middle grade, verging on YA. I say technically because any adult who wouldn’t enjoy this has a piece of coal for a heart and loops of iron chain for intestines. I really liked the first Tiffany Aching book, but […]

“What’s magic, eh? Just wavin’ a stick an’ sayin’ a few wee magical words. An’ what’s so clever aboot that, eh? But lookin’ at things, really lookin’ at ’em, and then workin’ ’em oout, now, that’s a real skill.”

The Wee Free Men (Discworld, #30) by Terry Pratchett

“Yes! I’m me! I am careful and logical and I look up things I don’t understand! When I hear people use the wrong words, I get edgy! I am good with cheese. I read books fast! I think! And I always have a piece of string! That’s the kind of person I am!” My second witchy read of the season, although I didn’t consciously choose to read it now with all my other upcoming witchy reads; I just wanted to read my next Discworld book. […]

Open Your Eyes and Then Open Them Again

The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett

February 25, 2021 by Ale Leave a Comment

I will forever and always love Terry Pratchett and everything he ever wrote. The fact that we will never get a new Pratchett novel still makes me sad, and I’ve stayed away from any rereads of his books for a while since they just make me miss him. But my awesome CBR book exchange partner sent me The Wee Free Men for book exchange, and after the year we all had, I both wanted to reread something I knew I’d love, and comfort myself with […]
