I expected too much from this one.

Alphabet Squadron (Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron, #1) by Alexander Freed

March 26, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

I was disappointed in this one, considering how much I’ve enjoyed Freed’s other Star Wars stuff. Up until I read this book, I might have even told you he was the most talented Star Wars writer working today (Claudia Gray being a very close second). His Rogue One novelization was a piece of art. The short story he wrote for A Certain Point of View was extremely poignant. But Alphabet Squadron was just okay. There was really nothing special about it at all. Maybe I […]

White Bird: a Wonder Story by R.J. Palacio

January 15, 2020 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Julian has a school project, to interview a family member for their biographical story. On a facetime chat, he talks his grandmother into sharing her childhood growing up in wartime France.  Hesitantly, she agrees to, and not only to do that but to share parts of her story she hasn’t told before. For Julian and his grandmother are Jewish, and Sara (his grandmother) is nervous about how her history seems to be repeating. We meet her as a child along with her impressive parents: her […]

“I don’t turn toward the light because it means someday I’ll ‘win’ some sort of cosmic game. I turn toward it because it is the light.”

Star Wars: Master & Apprentice by Claudia Gray

December 19, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Still ace at Star Wars novels, Claudia. I really should read her non-Star Wars work at some point, but every time I finish one of her SW books, I’m left satisfied, and feel no need to do so. Perhaps this is a mistake. This book was unexpected, both in that she chose to write about the earlier period of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s partnership instead of the later period most SW writers play in, and that I enjoyed it so much, when I’m usually […]

Quoth the Raven “Oh, God, What for?” – Supernatural: Nevermore

March 5, 2015 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

So…I paid for and read authorized Supernatural fanfiction. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever read. But it wasn’t the best, either. I can’t decide if I’m curious enough to read more or not. I may just stick with AO3. Here there be .gifs and .jpgs. Because of course there are.

Time to branch out, I think, “Mr. Castle.”

March 5, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m not sure whether I just wasn’t in the right mood for this, or whether the gag of having tie-in novels supposedly written by a fictional author in a TV show has just run its course, but either way Deadly Heat was less fun than the last couple of installments. (It was still fun, though.) This one picks up where the last one left off, with Detective Nikki Heat embroiled in a manhunt for the turncoat spy that ordered her mother’s murder. A new case […]
