Definitely makes you feel like you bought this at the airport… in the best possible way
Try to relax, but you’ll just keep leaning in to get closer, more of this, faster. “Spiral” is a delivery system of everything fun and exciting about pop fiction. It’s a thriller with an old-school villain, a terrifying bio-weapon, wildly-believable pseudo-science, meticulously revised history, and a kickass prose-style. I loved this. That’s not to say there’s anything revelatory about it… it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it certainly paints it differently than any of the other wheels rolling around out there, and I’ll buy that […]
Short tale by Flynn a worthwhile read
The Grownup was originally published likely to fill the gap in new Gillian Flynn product a few years after Gone Girl released and Flynn has been preoccupied with various television outings, including the HBO adaptation of Utopia with David Fincher. The Grownup first appeared in a collection of short stories called Rogues last year, curated by George R.R. Martin. Another writer who does everything else short of writing his their next book. But I digress. Since Flynn stormed the charts with the brilliant Gone Girl there […]
Flames…on the side of my face…
Her – Reviewed on KatsCannon “I found the final plot twist unsatisfying, as plot twists often are: nothing like life, which – it seems to me – turns less on shocks or theatrics than on the small quiet moments, misunderstandings, or disappointments, the things that it’s easy to overlook.” That quote was strategically chosen because I found the final plot twist of this DEEPLY unsatisfying. Remember how the last book I reviewed was all about apathy and no vitriol? I’ve saved that for this entry. […]
The girl who has survived her creator
The Girl in the Spider’s Web was okay. I didn’t have any glaring problems with it; nor was I especially blown away by it. Lagercrantz does seem to have done a good enough job capturing the spirit of the original trilogy, and his background as a crime reporter certainly prepares him for suspenseful crime thrillers — particularly ones where one of the protagonists is himself a journalist. Here’s the Goodreads summary: “Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have […]
Unremarkable but entertaining thriller
Imagine you are on your way home from work. You’re thinking about your evening, maybe on your way to meet some friends for a pick-up basketball game. Minding your own business. Suddenly a coat is thrown over your head and you are manhandled off the subway, injected with something, dragged through the train station and shoved in a car that speeds away from the curb. All in a matter of minutes. You wake up hours later in a feature less room to be told you […]
