A popular thriller worth your time

January 5, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I couldn’t remember where I’d seen this book recommended and that made me I think understandably cautious. The general summary—it’s about the daughter of a female serial killer and her life after turning in her own mother—made me more cautious. But I gave it a go because ebooks from the library have made me much more freewheeling in my reading choices. And you know what, I’m glad I did. I think I was still reeling from My Absolute Darling (dear christ do not read that book). […]

Something to read with all the lights on

December 30, 2017 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I was gifted this book and told it was a great piece of YA literature featuring a well written female character. Going off that, I had no idea this was actually a bit of a thriller so I was a bit taken aback when I got into the main part of the plot. I don’t read a ton of thrillers and this might be my first YA thriller, so it was actually pretty fun to experience, just not what I was expecting. The person who […]

Post-Apocalyptic Tale of Wonder

December 26, 2017 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’ve been meaning to read The Girl with All the Gifts since the film came out last year. As usual, I kept putting it off until one of my book clubs assigned it. This was voted as the Mocha Girls Read supernatural pick for October. I read nearly half of it in one day, finally finished it up in December. I’m glad that I did, still a wild ride despite hearing spoilers during the in person discussion. I’m not a fiercely against them when it comes […]

Dark Matter feels like a slightly deceptive title

November 16, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

The title Dark Matter feels a little bit deceptive as “dark matter” is only brought up once.  However something more accurate like, “Putting humans in a quantum state of superposition and the consequences” is a little awkward as a title.  Regardless, Dark Matter is a taut science fiction thriller, with dashes of mystery and true love. Jason Dessen lives an ordinary life.  Married to the love of his life, Daniela, raising their son Charlie together, and working as a college professor.  Every once in a while, […]

Can a Dude Be a Mary Sue?

October 19, 2017 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

The Naturalist By Andrew Wayne I picked this book because it popped up as a “because you read…” option in Kindle Unlimited. It’s a Mystery/Thriller following Dr. Theo Cray. Dr. Cray studies Bioinformatics, so finding trends in different environments and how those trends affect the species that occur in said environments. While doing research in a forest in Montana, Dr. Cray is picked up in spectacularly dramatic fashion as a person of interest int he death of a former student. Theo is eventually cleared of […]

A mysterious murder and excess alcohol consumption? Must be an unreliable female narrated thriller…

October 9, 2017 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

I’ve been on a bit of a thriller kick recently, so–like many other Cannonballers–I’ve read In a Dark Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. They relied very heavily on the ‘unreliable female narrator’ trope, bringing up inevitable comparisons to The Girl on the Train. They’re not as good as Girl on the Train. (I haven’t read Gone Girl, while I have seen the film, so I can’t compare there.) I’m way behind on my reviewing, but I figured I’d start with these ones. Quick […]
