She’s no Stephanie Plum

Full Scoop by Janet Evanovitch

April 15, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Janet Evanovitch is best known for the Stephanie Plum novels, set in New Jersey and featuring her eponymous bail bondswoman heroine.  This novel is not one of those.  Rather, it is part of Evanovitch’s “Full” series, set in Beaumont, South Carolina, and featuring a recurring cast of ‘zany’ main and supporting characters. Full Scoop is the 4th novel in the series and it is the one I started with- I don’t think I missed much not having started at the beginning. Full Scoop is a […]

Good, but Forgettable

Grace is Gone by Emily Elgar

April 11, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

Based on the real-life story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Grace is Gone tells of a Mother and daughter duo, Meg and Grace, that are bound at the hip. Grace suffers from debilitating diseases that leave her wheelchair ridden and utterly dependent on her mother. At first their relationship feels pure and inspirational. The pair are the darlings of their town, until one night, Grace’s chair is found toppled over while Meg lies bludgeoned to death nearby. Jon, a disgraced local journalist joins forces with Grace’s […]

This One’s For the Girls

Two Girls Down by Louise Luna

April 3, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I don’t usually like mystery/thriller books that have to do with the disappearance and/or murder of children. It’s not for any principled reason; these books just usually make me uncomfortable. Perhaps because the trope of the missing/killed kid still fuels the 1980s paranoia about random strangers who just drive around and scoop up children. Or maybe because it’s just tired and exploitative. Either way, Louise Luna’s Two Girls Down, came highly recommended. It helps that it was written by a woman than a man. Not that […]

The Broken Girls is a creepy page-turner

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James

April 3, 2020 by pixifer 1 Comment

After the Sun Down Motel, I went in search of Simone St. James’s other books. The Broken Girls had the best reviews, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to read about teenage girls whose families had abandoned them. I’m glad I checked it out! It wasn’t quite as breathtaking as the Sun Down Motel, but it is really good.  2014: Twenty years ago, Fiona’s older sister, Deb, was murdered by her boyfriend and her body dumped on the grounds of a former boarding school named […]

In the Dark grabbed me and never let go

In the Dark by Loreth Anne White

March 20, 2020 by pixifer 1 Comment

I actually read this back in January but have had trouble organizing my thoughts in order to review it. The problem is that it is so spellbinding that I absolutely blew through it. Afterward, I was left feeling like I had walked home during a windstorm – tired but invigorated. But a lot of the details were fuzzy because I read it so fast.  In the Dark is the story of eight strangers who have been invited on an all-expenses paid vacation at a luxurious […]

The Sun Down Motel is a rollercoaster ride of nail-biting terror

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James

March 10, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

The Sun Down Motel hooked me from the start. I loved it that first night of reading. But when I picked it up the second night, I was filled with dread. I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue. I chalked it up to being tired and read on. I’m glad I did because it’s an amazing book. But it is a tense book, absolutely gripping and nerve-wracking. I had a headache yesterday evening from clenching my jaw while reading this. I didn’t even realize I […]
