Cannonballing with an excellent but very intense mystery/thriller.

All the Sinners Bleed by S.A. Cosby

June 1, 2023 by narfna 6 Comments

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It has not affected the content of my review. Gird your loins for this one, friends. This is not a gentle romp through a mystery, with all of the small town residents rallying to support their competent and now respected Black sheriff. I didn’t really think it was possible, but this is somehow even more intense than Razorblade Tears. Makes sense, though, because he’s juggling like ten thousand more storylines and themes here than he did in […]

The crowning exception to “The book is always better than the movie.”

Jaws by Peter Benchley

May 2, 2023 by TylerDFC 1 Comment

While I’m sure there are those who disagree, Jaws is the crowning exception to the rule “The book is always better than the movie.” In adapting the book to the script the story was transformed, made stronger and streamlined, and fixed all of the problems of the novel. To be transparent, Jaws is my all-time favorite movie. Ok, maybe the top five but that’s splitting hairs and ranking is largely dependent on which of my favorite movies I have most recently seen. I love every […]

There Isn’t an Adequate Title To Tell You How Much I Loathed this Book

The People Next Door by Keri Beevis

April 19, 2023 by Melina 8 Comments

First let me start by stating the title of the book…(glances at another tab), right, right…it’s The People Next Door. As I have been reading this book I’ve been exclaiming to my friends, “I really hate it!” and then they will ask what it’s called and I have given a general plethora of wrong names such as The Next Door Neighbors, Neighbors, The People Who Live Next Door and finally I just started calling it The People Vs. Larry Flint because that was the only title that I […]

A Plot Within A Plot

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

April 3, 2023 by Melina Leave a Comment

Imagine being a writing professor at a small community college. Your own novel had meager success but it certainly feels like your chance of fame and fortune are rapidly dwindling.  Enter a young man named Evan.  He doesn’t want or need your help with his writing. He has the best plot, one completely new, one that doesn’t follow a single trope.  You read a few pages and he’s right, it is totally different than anything you’ve ever read, depressingly you wished you had though of the […]

“A brave man helps. A coward just gives presents.”

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

March 23, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I’m a big King fan: I have seen a few movie adaptations, would put “The Stand” on my list of top 20 books, and this is the 15th book of his I have read. This new edition to his pantheon caught my eye at the library and was hesitantly recommended by a friend who was already shin-deep into this book, but on the fence about it. Having finished it, I give it a resounding fist shake for an excellent premise but meandering execution. It’s a […]

Wolf Women

Watch the Girls by Jennifer Wolfe

March 15, 2023 by Jake 3 Comments

Whew. This book is something. Don’t know if I loved it or hated it but I know I won’t forget it! I almost quit it five times and yet I couldn’t put it down. I can usually handle bleak, depressing crime fiction but oh man, this one is bleak!* It mostly works until it doesn’t…but the ending kind of comes together but it doesn’t? I really need more people to read this so I can parse it out. A few more points… -Loved: Jennifer Wolfe […]
