Trauma, memory, and action

April 5, 2014 by AskImagine Leave a Comment

The play Blood Sky is ending its run at T. Schreiber Studio. I read the play in preparation for seeing it, but then a cross-country move prevented me from seeing it performed. This was a major loss, because I believe, like many plays, that Blood Sky would really come to life on stage. This is the story of Joley, a 30-year-old woman who is recounting her experiences at 14 and 18. She is played by three different women of different ages; at times, 30-year-old Joley talks directly to the […]

On the Road Again

February 26, 2014 by anotterchaos 1 Comment

See, this is what I get when I read two books on the same topic sequentially. The title says it.  Michael Kostroff is one of those actors that make you say, “Hey!  That guy!  What was he in?”  In this book, the answer is “The Producers” (ensemble and understudy for Max Bialystock), and “Les Miserables” (Thenardier). Like the last book I reviewed, Unnaturally Green, this is a memoir of a touring actor.  In the first book, the actor is young, and green in more ways […]

An Essential Guide To Crafting The Ten Minute Play

February 18, 2014 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

I used this book to help me write my first ten minute play and found it immensely helpful. Garrison is easy to read and approachable, even for theatre newbies like myself. Read the full review here.

Wait until she sees my rich golden shaft

January 26, 2014 by AskImagine 1 Comment

I recently saw Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, with Mark Rylance, on Broadway, in an all-male performance. It was sublime. We are seeing it again next week, so I read the play in preparation. I haven’t read the play – perhaps any Shakespeare – for at least 15 years. It turns out reading Shakespeare is like riding a bike. (Although if you have to get onto a bike after 15 years, it is far scarier than reading Shakespeare.) Viola and Sebastian are twins, shipwrecked and separately rescued. […]

The Players and the Played

January 14, 2014 by Sara_Tonin00 Leave a Comment

Morality Play is another jewelbox novel – sparse, elegant, compact. There is a simplicity and a brevity to the story – it takes place over two weeks – that could feel insufficient, but doesn’t. This could be a longer book, but the sketchbook quality of it fits the time and story. The story is that of a young medieval priest, not without sin, and fairly self-aware. He’s a wanderer, restless and hungry, who stumbles upon a scene of death. A band of players in the […]
