Magic and War Collide

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden

September 8, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I loved the first novel in this trilogy because for me it was the perfect mix of fairy tale magic with some real life politics mixed in.  By focusing on the story of a young girl in her village, the novel had a nice intimate setting even as it dealt with a figurative battle between good and evil, the old ways and the new.  The greater politics opened up the potential for a broader scale in the rest of the trilogy, and I think that […]

Meh, ok, I don’t care anymore. Mostly.

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden

This was the right ending to the story, but I started disliking Vasya in the previous story and she does not redeem herself much. She still refuses to consider how other people might be affected by her actions, but at least she spends most of her time in the folkloric realm and not the real world. Vasya’s “reveals” were a little cliche, as was what happens when she goes to free Morozko. Saw that coming two books ago. For the reveals she discovers about herself […]

Do Not Suffer a Witch to Live

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden

March 29, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

Wow. Just wow. I was breathless and in tears within minutes of starting book #3 (have tissues near by) and was full of anger through most of the book. I can honestly say make sure you have this one ready to go after finishing book #2. Vasya comes into her own in this one and we are given a glimpse into a possible future. The book moves back and forth between Sasha and then Vasya in this one. My only complaint is I wanted more […]

Great from beginning to end.

The Winter of the Witch (Winternight Trilogy, #3) by Katherine Arden

Time to buckle down and once again go at my review backlog. Apologies in advance for the sloppy or haphazard reviews about to spew forth from my keyboard. This trilogy, to sum up, is worth it. It’s a bit of a slow burn in the first book as Arden really sets her stage, with amazingly detailed descriptions of what life was like in medieval Russia, but I think all that set-up is more than worth it for the end product, which was a coming of […]

A wholly satisfying ending to a great fantasy trilogy

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden

March 4, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is the third and final volume in the trilogy, and the action starts immediately after the second book. This is not the place to start. If you are not caught up, drop everything and start from the beginning with The Bear and the Nightingale.  Vasilisa “Vasya” Petrovna managed to defeat one enemy, but at a great cost. Releasing the legendary firebird has caused much of Moscow to catch fire and the citizens, spurred on by the vengeful and jealous Father Konstantin are looking for […]
