Not your regular girl scouts (Triple bingo!)

Lumberjanes, vol 1: Beware the Kitten Holy by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis

October 31, 2021 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR13 Bingo: The Wilds Official book description: FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX! At Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s camp for hard-core lady-types, things are not what they seem. Three-eyed foxes. Secret caves. Anagrams. Luckily, Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five rad, butt-kicking best pals determined to have an awesome summer together… And they’re not gonna let a magical quest or an array of supernatural critters get in their way! The mystery keeps getting bigger, and it all begins here. I’m not outdoorsy in […]

Tech-free? Either a nightmare or a dream!

Unplugged by Gordon Korman

October 31, 2021 by crystalclear 1 Comment

Unplugged By Gordon Korman   Not gonna lie, I picked this up because there was a cute little lizard on the cover holding a power cord in its mouth.   Jett Baranov is the son of the emperor of the technological world.  Well, not really.  But his father owns a technology company that’s bigger than Google and Apple combined.  His mother works as a famous orthodontist for Orthodontists Without Borders and is often out of the country.  With a mostly absent mother, a work-obsessed father, […]

A supernatural Romancing the Stone

Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole

October 30, 2021 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’m still working through the Immortals After Dark series from Kresley Cole. This series thrives on both the “enemies to lovers” and “fated mates” tropes. Two supernatural beings have a violent encounter, then spend the rest of the book fighting the passion between them. It can be formulaic, but always entertaining and often comforting. Never difficult to finish. Pleasure of a Dark Prince is the 8th book since the first novella, but the 11th novel that I’ve read from Cole. We go deep into the […]

Solid entry in the Tempe Brennan series

Fatal Voyage by Kathy Reichs

October 28, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Up in the mountains of North Carolina, where the last towns nestle into the Appalachian wilderness, a commercial airliner crashes. Kathy Reichs’ long time heroine, forensic pathologist Temperance ‘Tempe’ Brennan, is called in to assist with identifying remains. As the police try to determine the source of the crash, Tempe uncovers a foot that doesn’t appear to belong to anyone on the flight manifest- leading her to a whole different investigation. Rounding out the mystery with some love story tension is the appearance on the […]

“Let heartbreak be alternative to coffe break, five midmorning minutes devoted to emotion.”

Rainbow Remnants in Rock Bottom Ghetto Sky by Thylias Moss

October 9, 2021 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I picked up Thylias Moss’s Rainbow Remnants in Rock Bottom Ghetto Sky through a variety of reading challenge tasks (Read Harder’s read a book of nature poems, Read Women’s tasks about a book about the natural world, a collection of poetry by a black woman), book club squares (Going with The Wilds), and some internet sleuthing. While I find it difficult to review poetry, I can tell you that I agree with the book’s blurb, it is a powerful book with poems that present the […]

The Swamp Will Eat You

Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

September 24, 2021 by Ale Leave a Comment

Since reading Russell’s short story collection, I’ve had her novel on my to-read. As always, bingo is a great time to knock a bunch of books off the TBR pile, so I finally made space for Swamplandia!. Sadly, I was underwhelmed. Russell’s writing is beautiful and there’s a ton of descriptive gems throughout the story, but plot wise, this book felt all over the place. Swamplandia! is an alligator themed adventure park run by the Bigtree family where they wrestle alligators and do stunts above the gator […]
