Everyone is secretly terrible – but there is hope for even the poorest of souls

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

Edgedancer by Brandon Sanderson

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

December 26, 2020 by ingres77 8 Comments

I’ve never read a Brandon Sanderson book I didn’t like. He’s insanely prolific, which sharply contrasts him with some of his colleagues, and is sturdy and reliable. And (I say this every time I read a book of his), I really just accept the fact that I’m going to like them and that everyone is right: these are good books. Maybe it’s just the contrarian in me, but I’m always skeptical. And The Way of Kings was no different. I bought this book….maybe five years […]

Ostraconophobics Beware

February 4, 2018 by Quorren 2 Comments

It’s hard knowing where to begin with a Sanderson book. His name on a cover means that whatever you are about to commit to reading is going to be sweeping and epic. Even writing a summary would probably put me at a 2000 word count. Since I have no idea where to begin, I’m just going to jot down my thoughts in some bullet points. I can’t stand the Alethi. I know that to have a plot, there must be conflict and for the Alethi, […]

I can’t emphasize enough how good this book and this series are.

So I deleted my original review of this book on Goodreads (but not on CBR) because I’ve never been happy with it. I never felt like it fully conveyed what I was trying to say. Heck, I’m not sure I even knew what it was that I wanted to say! I remember thinking this book was so dense and a little impenetrable, and now upon my first re-read, I’ve got none of that. This time around, I sunk right into this world like it was […]

Slow to Start, But Picked Up in the Second Half

September 28, 2017 by Lisa Bee 5 Comments

Coming in at 1001 pages (before the appendix of magic theory and other information, of course), The Way of Kings may well be the longest individual novel that I’ve ever read. But it’s just the first in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive series. Which is apparently also tied together with the worlds of Sanderson’s other series (including the Mistborn universe, the first trilogy of which I read earlier this year and loved). And honestly? That’s… a lot. It seems pretty complex and while you don’t necessarily […]

This is a really long book, you guys

January 15, 2017 by Malin 14 Comments

We primarily follow the story of three people in this book, with occasional points of view from others to further shed light on goings on. The first (and in my opinion, most interesting) of our protagonists is Kaladin Stormblessed, a surgeon’s son, turned army spearman turned slave. After numerous escape attempts, he ends up at the long-running war on the Shattered Plains, a desolate landscape made up of numerous rocky plateaus, requiring the fighting armies to have bridges to get across the chasms. Kaladin becomes […]
