If you hit me with your cane again, you’re gone

a good myth is hard to kill by MajorGodComplex

December 22, 2022 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

Kaz is a smart man, but not smart enough to reconsider snarking the most powerful man in the world when dragged out of Ketterdam and across the fold to work for him. Kaz isn’t worried. He’s got plot armor. The Darkling showed his hand much too early with all of that ‘together we’ll change the world’ bullshit.  Still, when the shadows begin to close in on him he can’t help but consider the possibility he may have miscalculated. ……………. Thanks to his black kefta, that’s […]

“I will strip away all that you know, all that you love, until you have no shelter but mine.”

Ruin & Rising (Shadow and Bone #3) by Leigh Bardugo

November 14, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Predictable Cannonball Read Bingo: Verse Leigh Bardugo created a detailed YA universe with interesting magical elements, warring factions, and all the trappings of a good fantasy tale; however, my time spent in Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse has been uneven. Though I loved her original duology, this trilogy didn’t do it for me. But I finished it. YAY! Or I should say we finished it, as I read the last half of this novel aloud to my teen. Unbeknownst to me, he still likes […]

“I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret.”

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

Before I started watching the Shadow and Bone Netflix series, I knew I wanted to read Leigh Bardugo’s books. They were on my radar when they came out but by then I was kind of burned out on YA fantasy (perish the thought!) Then over the summer, I started reading Sarah J. Maas’s fairy catnip situation (A Court of Thorns and Roses book series aka ACOTAR) which jumpstarted my dormant magical world-loving heart again. So I picked up the first Shadow and Bone book at the library and began plowing through […]

There are no others like us…and there will never be.

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Coming off the high of reading the first couple of A Crown of Thorn and Roses books, I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy but was a little less enthusiastic about it. Compared to the ACOTAR books, well, I just wasn’t feeling the same pull. They share a lot of the same things: heroines who struggle with their “powers,” love triangles, fantastical worlds, but Shadow and Bone didn’t quite suck me into the story as much. I think part of it was having a hard time with the […]

The problem with wanting is that it makes us weak.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

CBR13 BINGO: Pandemic and 1/2 Cannonball! I used to read a lot more YA. A lot as in almost exclusively, and was particularly drawn to the fantasy/supernatural end of that spectrum. Rife with trilogies and series, which are also my bag, I fell down that particular rabbit hole for years. I think I was a little overloaded on it after awhile and when books began to blur together, I kind of phased out. I guess when you get to the point where you can’t remember which […]

Great author forcing herself into the confines of a genre=middling book.

Shadow and Bone (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

December 3, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Two things: 1. Not really sure why this is called Shadow and Bone? Sounds very dramatic, but not super relevant to actual plot or theme. Things with “bone” in the title were very in in 2012, I guess? 2. Very glad this series wasn’t my first exposure to Bardugo’s writing. I said this in a Goodreads status update, but although it’s not badly written, it’s nothing special either. Pretty standard YA fantasy with attending tropes and such, with flairs here and there of interesting worldbuilding. […]
