I accessorize for one and all

July 24, 2016 by Emmalita 6 Comments

I steamed through the remaining books of The Parasol Protectorate series and then came to a screaching halt when it came time to write the reviews. It’s not because the books aren’t fantastic, its because I’m easily distractable. The series is a fun read. I highly recommend. Lady Alexia Maccon, neé Tarabotti, is a preternatural living in steampunk Victorian England. Her husband is the Alpha of London’s werewolf pack and the head of the Bureau for Unnatural Registration (BUR), and sits on the Queen’s Shadow […]

She may be soulless, but she sure is sassy

May 31, 2016 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Despite what the paltry number of reviews I’ve written tell you, I am a voracious reader. I love getting into series, even more so when I have some assurance that the series ends well. I was excited when I saw Narfna’s review of the last book in Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series. I didn’t even read her review, I just bought the first book and read it as quickly as I could. I am now deep in book two and have the remaining books on […]

A satisfying end to the series.

Gonna keep this short because I feel like I’ve already said most of what I want to say about this series in the previous four reviews I’ve written for it. It’s fluffy. It’s fun. It’s got benevolent supernatural creatures in it who faff around being supernatural and adorable. It’s got puns. It’s got dirigibles. It’s got smoochies. And this one has pyramids and mummies in it. If you liked the first four books, you will probably like this one, too, although the ending was a […]

Very silly fun.

Look, if you’ve made it to book four of this series, you know what you’re in for. Vast quantities of absurd silliness. Lots of naked werewolves (played comedically, of course). Foppish vampires. Alexia being no nonsense and getting herself into all sorts of trouble. A supernatural threat that’s not really a threat, but mostly just an excuse for us to hang out with these characters for four hundred pages. The Parasol Protectorate is not plot heavy. These are hang-out books, and if you happen to […]

If Oscar Wilde was a Badass Victorian Woman

April 5, 2016 by ModernLove 4 Comments

Weeks ago, on a rainy Friday afternoon, I needed something fun and uplifting to read. The lovely people of the CBR Book Club Facebook page threw a slew of recs at me, and this was one of the ones I ended up with. Y’all are good. This was exactly what I was looking for, and enough outside my usual reading zone that it made me feel happy for expanding my horizons (I’m not always a sci-fi or romance reader, and this one definitely has both involved). […]

La Diva Tarabotti returns to her home planet.

March 25, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

This series continues to be witty, fluffy fun. It’s really difficult not to just read one of these books in one sitting. They go down like ice cream on a hot day. With the exception of this one thing that I’ll get to later, there really isn’t much to say about this book. Carriger’s writing continues to be witty and fun, and sly in all the best ways. Her sense of humor is definitely in line with mine. Her characters are flawed and lovable. Her […]
