The Martian by Andy Weir book cover

Seriously, why aren’t we worshipping duct tape?

July 27, 2015 by faintingviolet 9 Comments

I have a crush on Mark Watney. I feel like I need to get that out of the way. Also, why aren’t we worshipping duct tape? Okay, moving on. If asked, I would not consider myself a big fantasy or sci-fi reader, but that is obviously changing if you take a look at my last several books. I have figured out why I have shied away from these works in the past – more often than not they are about plot, plot, plot and not […]

All my fears were unfounded – of course I loved this book

July 8, 2015 by Malin 5 Comments

Six days into the first manned mission on Mars, there is a huge dust storm, forcing most of the crew to evacuate, earlier than anticipated. Mark Watney, the crew’s botanist and mechanical engineer is impaled on an antenna and believed to have died. He wakes up alone, stranded on Mars with no way of signalling Earth that he is still alive. The next manned mission to Mars is scheduled in four years’ time, and even if he were able to send a signal to announce […]

Seriously Mark? Seriously?

May 6, 2015 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I have read and listened to some really good books this year. It’s going to be hard to choose a top 5, but I’m pretty certain that The Martian will be on that list. The perilous adventures of Mark Watney are amazing – griping, funny, and weirdly educational. I got the audiobook with the intention of listening to it while I worked, but I was so enraptured by the story that I listened to the bulk of it for 7 hours straight. I highly recommend […]

Still time to read it before the movie comes out

April 13, 2015 by Loopyker Leave a Comment

I can’t believe it has taken me a month to get to writing this review.  I was telling everyone about it when I finished it, but just didn’t get it written down.  I had managed not to hear much about this book beforehand.  I can’t even remember where it was recommended so that I put it on my library hold list…and then waited months for it to come up since it was so popular. I will start with what a lot of other people say […]

The Last Man on Mars is Super Quippy. Also. In Mortal Danger…dun-dun-duuuun!

March 10, 2015 by tillie Leave a Comment

It is not often that a book about a man stranded on Mars could take place just about anywhere – but The Martian by Andy Weir could. In The Martian we meet Mark Watney the only man left on Mars due to a freak accident and misunderstanding. But this is merely a setup for a battle between Man and the elements of Mars. And if anyone stands a chance it’s Watney – the engineer of the space crew that abandoned him. The book does not […]

In space, no one can hear you scream like a little girl

January 25, 2015 by janniethestrange 4 Comments

While standing in the checkout line at the grocery store, waiting as patiently as I could while  a previous customer argued over coupon redemption and dug around for and counted out exact change, this book caught my eye. I don’t have a lot of experience with the sci fi genre but it  was either that or some tabloid with one Kardashian or other on the cover. I picked it up, glanced at the cover, perused the enthusiastic blurbs and read the first few pages, suddenly […]
