Cannonballing with an Alyssa Cole book I enjoyed very much.

An Unconditional Freedom (The Loyal League, #3) by Alyssa Cole

May 10, 2019 by narfna 12 Comments

I liked this! Almost without reservations! It feels so good to really like a book Alyssa Cole has written. I had some troubles with the first book in this series similar to the ones I’ve had with Reluctant Royals (character chemistry, mostly), but the second two have both been my favorite things by far that she’s written. I think maybe it’s because they’re such hardcore historical fiction, and with this one especially, the focus is almost equally split between historical detail, individual character arcs/growth, and […]

Love during the American Civil War

February 18, 2018 by Malin 1 Comment

Until she was thirteen, Marlie Lynch grew up with her mother, a freed slave and wise woman. After her white father’s death, she was taken in by her half-sister and has been able to combine her knowledge of herbs and root magic with scientific principles. Three years into the American Civil War, Marlie and her half-sister are working surreptitiously to aid the cause of the Union, giving aid to runaway slaves and Freedmen, taking medicine and food to imprisoned Union soldiers, and with Marlie sending […]

Yay, I liked this so much!

I was not pleased that the first book in this series didn’t really click with me. So many people enjoyed it! I wanted in on the party. But something about the romance between the MCs didn’t gel with me, so I rated it three and a half stars and moved on with my life, hoping that book two would be more my style. And it was! Oh, yay. Something that I did really appreciate in the first book and that holds true for this one […]

A Civil War romance with spying and plenty of danger

August 10, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

From Goodreads: Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South – to spy for the Union Army.  Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet – risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia. Two undercover agents who share a common cause – and an undeniable […]

I didn’t like this as much as everyone else has :\

I liked this book! I did. But I wanted to love it, and I didn’t. Ugh, and all the pieces for me loving it were in place! Tensions over class, racial and gender divides. A romance involving characters who logistically will find it difficult to be together (white man/black woman). A badass heroine who does really cool things all while still experiencing the full range of human emotion. The idea that the heroine was black was also appealing, because my favorite genre of romance (historicals) […]
