A Much-Wanted Dialectic

The Unwanted Guest by Tamsyn Muir

September 8, 2024 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

Hah, Ok I thought maybe doing this short story was a little bit cheeky.  But then I saw that fellow Cannonballer Monty had beaten me to the punch! All the permission I needed. In physical sense, The Unwanted Guest was initially a little tricky for me to track down and read because I have so far only seen it in the paperback copies of Nona the Ninth. I wasn’t going to buy a paperback version, as I have already purchased two copies of the book […]

Happy Birthday Nona

Nona the Ninth (The Locked Tomb Series) by Tamsyn Muir

September 18, 2022 by LittlePlat 19 Comments

*Looks around sneakily*  Mild spoilers for the series in the review, more pressing ones have had the whiteout treatment. Yeah, split me Tipex.   Oh look, it’s a surprise book! When I first picked up Gideon the Ninth a few years back, it was advertised as being part one of a trilogy. And when Harrow The Ninth was released, we were all assured it was two down and one to go. But then just over a year ago, there was the announcement that we were […]

“I think ‘bone frenzy’ might be a term open to coarse misinterpretation, personally.”

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

I started screaming within the first 60 pages. This was good screaming, mind you. Surprise-party-on-a-rollercoaster-with-Elvis-in-space screaming. Everything that I had learned and loved from Gideon the Ninth exploded in my face, leaving a cloud of gore and pure insanity- and you know what? I was into it. Big time. If you have yet to read Gideon (WHY?!) then DO NOT READ THIS WRITE UP. Do not read anything about Harrow, do not read Gideon‘s book jacket, and do not waste any more time! Go go go! Our Lady Harrowhawk is, well, […]

cbr12bingo – Cannonballer Says

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

August 17, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 6 Comments

Y’all really got me with this one! Bothari43 first grabbed my attention with an excellent review/cat pic combo, then Bea Pants increased my interest with promises of broad swords and dirty magazines. I don’t usually read much Science Fiction/Fantasy, but after the surprise hits of new favorite Becky Chambers (whom I would not have found without the help of Cannonball), I decided to give it a go! I was wary at first of the breakdown of Houses; I am often scared off by complex mythologies, […]

Gloriously Deranged Insanity

Harrow The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

August 9, 2020 by LittlePlat 10 Comments

Sorry, but it’s nigh on impossible to discuss this book without mentioning the endgame from Gideon The Ninth. You probably shouldn’t be picking up this book anyhow if you haven’t read Gideon. And if you have read Gideon, perhaps give it a bit of a re-read before embarking on Harrow The Ninth. You will thank me later. This book enjoys being tricky Man, this was one of my most anticipated books of the summer. After the wild ride that was Gideon The Ninth, I was […]

Even Very Good Things are Better IN SPAAACE!

Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb Trilogy) by Tamsyn Muir

December 28, 2019 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Of course, I was going to read this book. The hype machine for its release was put into overdrive around August or so, and since then, it’s been relentless. The surrounding Twitter storm, in particular, was something to behold. While virtually all the talk was positive, this level of hype, as always, made me a bit wary, because such high expectations can be very hard to live up to – especially for an author’s debut novel. However, it was easy to see why people were […]
