The Bloat Between Oceans

April 20, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

**Sort of spoilery review, because I have things I need to say.** I picked up this book as it was the April pick for my local library book club, of which I am a new member. I put it off because I knew this was not my kind of book. I had heard of the film adaptation and scene the trailers, and it seemed like a good movie, just not my kind of movie. I am not one for pain, and this movie (and book) […]

I’ll maybe think of a witty title when I stop crying….

February 16, 2017 by kella 2 Comments

This book centres on Tom and his wife Isabel,  just after WWI.  Tom is a lighthouse keeper on a remote island off the coast of Australia- isolated from anyone except his wife; a supply boat comes every three months, and they get to visit the mainland once every three years. […]

What happens in Janus, doesn’t always stay on Janus

March 13, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I believe I am the third or fourth Cannonballer to post a review on M.L Stedman’s the Light Between Oceans this week alone; I would imagine we are all Pajiba readers as well who happened to see the trailer for the movie adaptation the site recently posted. Tom Sherbourne came to tend the lighthouse on Janus, a tiny island off the coast of Australia, after several years at the front lines of WWI. Before he leaves for a several years stay he meets Isabel in […]

“That’s what bravery is. Standing by the consequences of your mistakes.”

March 11, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 1 Comment

On a desolate island miles from civilization, a man finds himself faced with an impossible choice. The man is Tom, a stoic, principled veteran, recently returned to Australia after serving in World War I. He’s damaged goods, carrying a heavy load of guilt for being one of the few to actually make it home from the war, alive and physically unscathed. He finds a job that speaks to his solitary tendencies as a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, an isolated island about half a day’s […]
