3.5 stars CBR13 Bingo: Machinery (space ships, the guide, Marvin – a lot of examples) Arthur Dent wakes up one morning to discover his house is about to be bulldozed. He’s very upset about it and goes to lie down in front of one of the bulldozers, so it can’t knock down his house, but is interrupted by his friend Ford Prefect, who has some very important things to tell him, and very little time left to do so. It turns out Ford Prefect is […]

The One Where I Review All the Young at Heart Book Club Picks, Finally.

Ghost Squad by Claribel Ortega

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

May 27, 2021 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I read these books all together for our Young at Heart book club so it only feels right to review them all together. Our goal for book club was to find book selections that reminded us of childhood in order to (hopefully) inspire a bit of lighthearted nostalgia. For the most part, these books succeeded on that metric for me. Ghost Squad – 4 stars Up first is Claribel Ortega’s Ghost Squad. I often have trouble sinking into Middle Grades books – it is where […]

A Classic Meh on the Reread

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

March 28, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

I’m pretty sure the first time I read Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, I was probably in my teens and reading it on my father’s recommendation. Dad seemed to want to introduce his kids to at least basic classic sci-fi, although I still don’t get his appreciation for William Gibson. So I figured since there’s a book club coming up where this is an option, it might be time for a re-read. My basic impression is that I can see why this is the classic […]
