The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

October 7, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Reviews of The Handmaid’s Tale almost invariably start like a collective trauma memory: where were you when it happened? I was twenty-ish, an English major at a nearby university. I was taught how to analyse literature, but not how to consume it, how to distinguish it, and I don’t think we ever read this one for class. Needless to say, most of my professors were middle-aged men. I did read it, though, and it stuck with me; I read it again a few years later. […]

Adaptations are a net good

The Handmaid's Tale by Renee Hault, Margaret Atwood

August 10, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

I forget when, but I remember I tried to read Atwood’s original book and couldn’t get into it. Since then, I’ve watched an episode of the show and seen how it’s reflecting our day-to-day lives more and more, so I thought the graphic novel adaptation would be a perfect avenue for a second attempt. I was right; the story does work much better for me in this format. Then again, that comes as no surprise because I tend to prefer graphic novels; I’m absolute bunk […]

“Still, I wanted to believe; indeed I longed to; and, in the end, how much of belief comes from longing?”

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

June 27, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

I worked three jobs in the summer of 2005. I frequently worked more than one during any given day. Days off did not exist- except, miraculously, for the 4th of July. The history of the 4th holds no meaning here, just that I finally had a day to myself. I spent my one day off in bed, reading The Handmaid’s Tale from cover to cover. I did not leave the room. I turned down, much to the chagrin of the person whose bed it was, all opportunities […]

A good and deserving sequel

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

February 27, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

The Testaments is a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale and I found it to be just as haunting as its predecessor, perhaps even more so. The significant difference between the two is that The Handmand’s Tail uses a single POV whereas The Testaments uses three characters. That difference comes through in many ways but one in particular that I thought was most interesting is the way that the different books affected the reader. The Handmaid’s Tale through Offred’s POV only shows the world of Gilead […]

A fitting amuse bouche to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ (in it’s various incarnations)

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

October 29, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Testaments is the hotly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, told by Atwood through the voices of three women intimately acquainted with the Gilead regime. It aims to answer the lingering question that many readers had after The Handmaid’s Tale – what brought about the oppressive regime’s collapse? Many words have been written here and all over the internet about this sequel. Was it needed? Is it just a cash-grab? My opinion on the ‘necessity’ of The Testaments is that it is an amuse […]

No books were harmed, this time

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

October 7, 2019 by Claire Badger Leave a Comment

I was 16 when I read The Handmaid’s Tale and I was just beginning my love affair with dystopian tales. I don’t think I liked bleak stories all that much growing up, but man, as soon as I read Fahrenheit 451 they were all I wanted. Give me some of that sweet, sweet harrowing future straight to the veins, and anything like it. When a friend gifted me The Handmaid’s Tale, I thought I’d love it. I read it voraciously, in about two days, and […]
