Travel Research Books

The Seafarers: The Atlantic Crossing by Melvin Maddocks, editor

The British Abroad: The Grand Tour in the Eighteenth Century by Jeremy Black

Traveling Beyond Her Sphere: American Women on the Grand Tour 1814-1914 by Bess Beatty

At work we’re in research mode, preparing for our new exhibition about travel in the 19th century. Based on my interests and previous research avenues I got handed the Grand Tour and a piece of the cruise industry as my responsibilities. The main reason why I gave this just four stars though is that this just doesn’t have a lot of great insight I think into Christie. We see letters she wrote […]

Magic & Manners

January 26, 2017 by Emperor Cupcake 7 Comments

The Cecelia and Kate books, set in an alternate-history Regency England where magic is commonplace, chronicle the lives of two cousins as they find love and foil a dastardly plot (Sorcery and Cecelia), travel the Continent while foiling an even more dastardly plot (The Grand Tour), and wrangle a number of children and dogs while foiling a slightly less dastardly plot (The Mislaid Magician). I adore the first book in this series. It’s an epistolary delight. Wrede and Stevermer wrote the story via “The Letter […]
