Ice Queen

The Stolen Heir by Holly Black

May 19, 2023 by Jen K 3 Comments

I absolutely adored The Folk of Air trilogy so naturally, I’ve also been reading all the additional novellas and follow on novels associated with the series. That is, however, also where I went wrong with this one because I thought it was another stand alone novel in the world, like How the King of Elfhame learned to Hate Stories and as a result, I think my expectations were a bit off vs what I got. This is the first of a duology so there is a bit more […]

“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1) by Holly Black

December 30, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

This one was fine! I liked the ending much better than I liked the first third or so. It was just, it was a lot of dramadrama, lots of characters, court politics, feelings, like a fairyland prime-time soap opera, and there’s a reason I don’t watch those anymore. But I did get pulled in as soon as Jude and Cardan started to interact more in a real way, because I am nothing if not a sucker for well-done enemies to lovers, and that part of […]

Revisiting The Folk of the Air, with more Cardan and Jude

How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories by Holly Black

December 30, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! Don’t read this book, or review unless you’ve finished the entire trilogy of The Folk of the Air. The Cruel Prince is the place to start. This companion book, which I suspect would clock in at novella-length if you removed all the beautiful full-colour illustrations throughout by Rovina Cai, works as part prequel and part sequel to The Folk of the Air trilogy, as well as an alternate POV to several of the series’ events, especially in The Cruel Prince, where Prince Cardan is possibly at his most loathsome. In […]

One final trip to Black’s Faerie realm

The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

December 26, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is the third and final book in the Folk of the Air trilogy. Don’t read this review if you haven’t read the previous two book, it’s impossible to review the story without mentioning events from earlier. If you want to start the series at the beginning (since the series is completed now), The Cruel Prince is the first book. Official book description: “He will be destruction of the crown and the ruination of the throne.” Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold onto. […]

Be careful what you wish for

The Wicked King by Holly Black

May 25, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

Spoiler warning! You really don’t want to start this book without having read the first book in the series, The Cruel Prince. It’s also pretty much impossible for me to review this book without spoiling parts of the first book, so if you’re not caught up, skip this review until you are. Seriously, even the book summary from Goodreads is pretty revealing. Look away now or suffer the consequences. You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring. The first lesson is to […]

Playing catch up on my faves

December 25, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

This year kind of got away from me. I didn’t realize that my last review was all the way back in April. That feels like decades ago honestly. I was noticing that almost all of my favorite books from this year got read after that, so I wanted to catch up a bit with reviews for some of my favorite 2018 books. Despite the lack of reviews, I’ve had an extraordinarily good reading year. Soooo many books and a good chunk of them were 4 […]
