A fun read in the run-up to Halloween

The Ex-Hex by Erin Stirling

November 4, 2023 by Malin Leave a Comment

Heartbroken after discovering that the gorgeous young man she’d spent all summer with may in fact have a “betrothed” back in Wales, Vivienne “Vivi” Jones gets very drunk and weepy and she and her cousin light some candles and throw together a curse, to make Vivi feel better. They think nothing of it, until nine years later, when Rhys Penhallow, Vivi’s ex, and descendant of Graves Glen’s founding father returns to charge the ley lines. Suddenly there are murderous plastic toy skulls, a talking cat, […]

Halloweentown Gets Sexy

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

February 26, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I don’t typically like romance unless it’s got some other genre along to help build story and character; just the relationship parts gets kind of one note. I picked up The Ex Hex and it’s got enough magic going wrong that it works with the relationship. What I don’t quite get is why/how putting a Welsh magic town in the North Georgia mountains is even slightly believable. I know this is both romance and magic, so it’s not exactly realism forward, btu that’s going too […]

Read too early for Halloween, but the review is in December so who’s counting

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This book isn’t quite as fun as the prior in the same series, but I’m glad to see how far Sterling can stretch the premise of her little universe. Here, we follow the cousin of Vivienne of The Ex Hex fame (now happily wifed up with Rhys Penhallow) (or maybe not wifed, but definitely partnered). Gwyn is happy running her quirky witchy store in Graves Glen, the former seat of power of the Penhallow family. Who shows up but another Welsh brother, and since this is Romanlandia, they only […]

“Never mix vodka and witchcraft.”

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

February 12, 2022 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

When I started reading this book it wasn’t very far in before I was thinking to myself “hmm… I’m not sure he’s such a bad guy, ladies” as Vivienne is (accidentally) drunkenly hexing her ex, Rhys. This could be a function of any number of things including my age, my own romantic history, the fact that I waited three months on my library’s hold list to get a copy, or the general state of the world. But it did affect my enjoyment because the thing […]

A talking cat that only says ‘Treats.’

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

I wouldn’t change a lick of this. I can’t really think of a reason not to give it five stars. I sat down on a Sunday morning and read this straight through, and it was a pleasure and a delight. I’ve been reading as many fluffy and witchy reads as I can since the beginning of September because I’m just feeling that right now, and publishers have been so obliging. I liked Witch, Please, and loved Payback’s a Witch. And I loved this one, too. Sometimes you […]
