Jim Butcher: I would like to kick you in the shins.

Battle Ground (The Dresden Files #17) by Jim Butcher

January 8, 2023 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

At the time of this writing, I have not finished reading this book, but I needed to take a break to commit some rage to the page. If anyone knows the whereabouts of author Jim Butcher so that I could have the quick opportunity to kick him in the shins, please let me know. I’ll be in and out before he knows what hit him, the “what” being my tiny feet. This is going to be a spoiler-tastic review (in fact, I’m going to reference […]

“I am what I am, regardless of what anyone calls it. No one can change it, regardless of what anyone calls it. And it mostly means that nothing has managed to kill me yet.”

Peace Talks (Dresden Files #16) by Jim Butcher

I’m rounding third and headed for home with The Dresden Files, with only one more published book in the series to read. There were about 6 years in between book 15 and this book and if I had waited that long, I would have been disappointed, and a little mad. Here’s a one-sentence summary of books 14, 15, and 16 for explanation Book 14 – Everything happens. Maybe too many things? Book 15 – Heist and Hijinks! A moderate amount of stuff happens. Book 16 […]

“Faith is about what you do. It’s about aspiring to be better and nobler and kinder than you are. It’s about making sacrifices for the good of others– even when there’s not going to be anyone telling you what a hero you are.”

Changes by Jim Butcher

As this is my 51st book of the year (and thus I am only one book away from my goal of 52) I’m glad to have some more of The Dresden Files as I make my way to the finish line. I just checked to be sure and I read my first of the series in February of 2021, so on average I’ve done one of these a month and it’s been a non-stop smirk-filled romp with the delightful James Marsters (aka Spike from Buffy) […]

In one word: Satisfying Cannonball Read Bingo: Landscape Oh hello there. It’s me again. With Dresden again. I gotta say, writing up reviews for these books has become an interesting exercise. I can’t remember when I have read a series this long (like, ever), and am doing so basically back-to-back, so being here again fills me with a strange deja vu. Plus writing these reviews is a special challenge because I like to be spoiler-free in my observations so I don’t want to get to […]

“What is the point of having free will if one cannot occasionally spit in the eye of destiny?”

White Night by Jim Butcher

In one word: Damsels Cannonball Read Bingo: Free! (From my local library) The Dresden Files are what I would call a fun yet forgettable romp. Every time I am writing a review I’m typically behind so I’m already halfway into his next book and have completely forgotten the plot of the previous one. This was no different. This time around I’m actually 3/4 through book 10 already so book 9 is truly a thing of the past. Butcher takes a page from Charlaine Harris (or […]

Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Have you ever been approached by a grim-looking man, carrying a naked sword with a blade about ten miles long in his hand, in the middle of the night beneath the stars on the shores of Lake Michigan? Until very recently my answer was a “definitely not”. Now, thanks to crystalclear for sending this book my way during the 2020 Book Exchange, my answer has changed: YES! By proxy, at least. I have been acquainted with the big swordy fella and many other weirds that […]
