I hope you die, I hope we both die

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

May 13, 2022 by Ellesfena 7 Comments

This book surprised me. For about the first 100 pages or so, I was sure I wasn’t going to like it and may not even finish it. But eventually it pulled me in and I found myself pretty caught up in the story. The protagonist of The Cruel Prince is a teenager named Jude, a human who lives in Faerie with her human twin sister Taryn and their fairy half-sister, Vivi. They live with Vivi’s father, who is wrapped up in the various intrigues and violence of […]

“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1) by Holly Black

December 30, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

This one was fine! I liked the ending much better than I liked the first third or so. It was just, it was a lot of dramadrama, lots of characters, court politics, feelings, like a fairyland prime-time soap opera, and there’s a reason I don’t watch those anymore. But I did get pulled in as soon as Jude and Cardan started to interact more in a real way, because I am nothing if not a sucker for well-done enemies to lovers, and that part of […]

Clever and Cruel

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

November 20, 2020 by Ale Leave a Comment

Why have I only just found Holly Black? I know she’s been around for a long time, I’ve seen the reviews go by on CBR, but somehow I never got around to reading any of her work. This is like my Rainbow Rowell experience all over again. I’m blown away. This book was perfect; an absolute dark delight. Jude Duarte is a human stolen away to the land of Faerie with her sisters. While Jude’s sisters find their own quiet ways to either assimilate or […]

Getting a FRESH START on my reviews with Bingo…

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

July 25, 2020 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

I have been sorely lax with my reviews this spring (gee; I wonder why?) even though I have actually been reading up a STORM since May. The great thing about Bingo is that sense of competition (with myself) that inspires me to actually write up reviews. So to be on-topic, I decided to start with the Fresh Start square and The Cruel Prince–the first in a series that has been on my Twitter feed for a while, a YA trilogy by Holly Black. I’d actually […]

Playing catch up on my faves

December 25, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

This year kind of got away from me. I didn’t realize that my last review was all the way back in April. That feels like decades ago honestly. I was noticing that almost all of my favorite books from this year got read after that, so I wanted to catch up a bit with reviews for some of my favorite 2018 books. Despite the lack of reviews, I’ve had an extraordinarily good reading year. Soooo many books and a good chunk of them were 4 […]

The Cruel Beauty of the Faeries

April 5, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Holly Black’s The Coldest Girl in Cold Town was the first audiobook that ever held my attention.  Even now, when I am trying to listen to them more, if I am somewhere I can sit, I grab my actual book/Kindle to read. The Coldest Girl in Cold Town was so good that after returning from a walk, I sat on my couch and kept listening for hours.  As a result, I am kind of surprised that I haven’t read her entire back catalog but I […]
