Everyone is secretly terrible – but there is hope for even the poorest of souls

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

Edgedancer by Brandon Sanderson

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

I’ve never read a Brandon Sanderson book I didn’t like. He’s insanely prolific, which sharply contrasts him with some of his colleagues, and is sturdy and reliable. And (I say this every time I read a book of his), I really just accept the fact that I’m going to like them and that everyone is right: these are good books. Maybe it’s just the contrarian in me, but I’m always skeptical. And The Way of Kings was no different. I bought this book….maybe five years […]

Happiness is a warm gun

July 5, 2018 by Shibuyama 4 Comments

The last time I reviewed a Brandon Sanderson book, I complained of Sanderson fatigue, the review got featured, and several more people complained about it with me. So it is a bit sheepishly that I confess I not only went back to him but that I read the entire second Mistborn series minus the one book that hasn’t been published yet. And I enjoyed them immensely. In fact, for someone like me who still had fond memories of earlier Cosmere experiences, The Alloy of Law, […]

Crying, waiting, hoping

The world is ending, as worlds in novels are wont to do.  Which is fair; that’s pretty good motivation to get the action rolling.  But what has consistently struck me about the Stormlight Archives series setting is that it feels like a world, meticulously crafted with distinct regions, cultures, and creatures.  In the first two books, Sanderson has used a handful of individuals to lay out a fantastical setting with warring factions, lost histories, well-defined magic, and personal entanglements. Oathbringer picks up right where Words […]

Three books in a row, this series continues to be ridiculously good.

It has never before taken me longer than a week to read a Brandon Sanderson book, and that’s including the previous two 1,000+ page behemoths in this series. But it took me almost three weeks to get through Oathbringer. This more than anything is proof that reading a book fast does not necessarily mean that it’s good, and reading one slowly doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy it. That’s a new thing for me. Usually I inhale books like I do my food, fast and without mercy. […]

Even better the second time through.

Re-reading this was such a good idea. I didn’t re-read Way of Kings before I read this in 2014, and that was probably a mistake. I picked up a lot of detail on this read that I didn’t the first time because #1 was so fresh in my mind. Also, it turns out I had forgotten nearly everything that happens in this book. Like, it was just gone, like I was reading the book for the first time again (and how many times have I loved a […]

Ringing in the new year with Brandon Sanderson short fiction Cosmere nerdery.

January 2, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Good way to start off the year, with a mini-Brandon Sanderson marathon in book form. I spent a cozy day on my couch yesterday visiting the Cosmere, and it was lovely. This collection is more than just a collection of all of Sanderson’s short fiction set in the Cosmere (a shared universe world that a majority of Sanderson’s works are set it in). It’s also a mini-study of the Cosmere itself. Each system (i.e. the Roshar system, where the Stormlight Archive books are set, or […]
