short review but trust me I adored this book

The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin

It’s funny–I really liked this book, but find myself struggling a bit to remember what happened specifically in it. I remember the broad strokes and the feeling of finishing it very well, but not so much the details of the plot. As a set up: we’re still focusing on the travails of Essun, orogene par none (maybe), and the counteracting travails of Nessun, her daughter, orogene of renown. What really set this novel apart from the prior entry was the emphasis on ‘how we got here,’ aka […]

it was a mistake to not have the second one of these queued up

The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin

June 4, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Without that twist from the first book–and without having another large twist in this one, which would end up feeling a bit gimmicky–it’s inevitable that this second entry in the The Broken Earth series would be a bit anticlimactic in comparison. And true to form, it sort of is. My hopes that the second person narration would fade away didn’t happen, but the second person narrator (driven by the character’s growing knowledge) does get more omniscient such that it’s less frustrating to read, and at times feels […]

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

So first, a story about this book from way back in…2017? 2018, maybe. I’m in the middle of interviewing for a new job, and am close to the end of the final day of interviews. The interviewer happens to know my former boss and so we were vibing, sharing stories. He proceeds to ask me what I do for fun, signalling that the interview is almost up. No problemo, I think, time to pull out the ol’ standby–I read, I say, I’m a reader. What’s […]

Damn! All the Answers I Wanted, and an Ending That Fits Perfectly with the Tone of the Series

October 15, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square (Round 2): This is the End In this final Hugo Award winning novel of The Broken Earth trilogy, Jemisin finally takes us back to the Shattering, the beginning of the Seasons and explains exactly how the world as Essun and Nassun know it came into being. There have already been many reviews singing the praises of this trilogy so I am going to keep it short and basic. Hoa has been the narrator throughout the trilogy but in this one, he finally narrates his […]

Glad I Didn’t Have to Wait After the Way Book 1 Ended!

October 1, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Award Winner It’s kind of convenient when every novel in a trilogy is an award winner since it means I can keep reading the series and fill multiple squares without taking a break from Bingo! There are going to be a quite a few big spoilers for the first novel in this one since it would be a bit difficult to discuss this one too much without revealing some major plots point, and twists and turns from the earlier novel. So you know, […]

It’s All About Timing

September 28, 2018 by Jen K 4 Comments

Bingo Square: White Whale I attempted to read this last year because it had so many rave reviews and I also felt like it was something I should read to explore more diversity in sci-fi/fantasy.  I think I put it down a few times too often because I kept losing the thread, and combined with the portions in second person, I simply couldn’t get into it. As a result, it seemed like the perfect fit for the White Whale category. It still took me a […]
