An okay romance.

The Dating Playbook (The Boyfriend Project, #2) by Farrah Rochon

October 22, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I was pretty into this at first but then my interest waned like a third of the way through and never really came back. Certainly it didn’t help that I was reading another stellar romance* at the same time and this one doesn’t hold up to it. This wasn’t bad, though! Just not great. *The Heart Principle, in case you were curious. This is the second book in Rochon’s adult romance series, following The Boyfriend Project, which I also generally liked but had some issues […]

The Dating Playbook by Farrah Rochon

One of the things my favorite authors have in common is that they love their characters for who they are at any given minute of the story and not because they represent an idea, an architype, or a wish fulfilled. In The Dating Playbook, the second in the Boyfriend Project series, Farrah Rochon loves her characters.  She loves her three friends – Samiah, Taylor, and London. She loves Jamar. She lets them feel all their feelings, be indecisive, be sexy, be messy and always worthy […]

Love was the last thing on their minds

Destiny's Captive by Beverly Jenkins

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

Romance has been a great salve for the general pandemic malaise. I’ve been loving own voices books featuring Black protagonists finding love, even when it was absolutely the last thing on their minds. These three novels all written by Black women were refreshing and reminded me why I love this genre. I absolutely love reading about an independent woman who falls in love with a sexy man who has his act together. I picked up Destiny’s Captive by Beverly Jenkins from the library. I had […]

I liked this, but I almost liked her friends more than her love interest.

This was cute. I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in the series, and maybe checking out the author’s back catalogue. The set-up here is that Samiah Brooks, tech prodigy working in Austin, has been duped by a scumbag, and she befriends two other women also duped by self-same scumbag. Their confrontation with him (over sushi volcano rolls!) goes viral. This brings unwanted attention and a lack of privacy, but it also brings Samiah two new friends, an area of her life […]

Thank you, Emmalita, for yet another good romance recommendation! (BINGO #1)

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

#CBR12 Bingo: Fresh Start (the beginning of a new series, AND my first book by this author) It would also work really well for Cannonballer Says, Money! and Friendship I got a free ARC of this on Netgalley in return for an unbiased review. I also liked the book enough that I have now paid money to own it. Samiah Brooks is getting ready for a date, while her pregnant sister reads her hilarious updates from another woman’s disastrous first date on Twitter. Samiah is mortified to discover […]

That Volcano Roll, Though

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

Bingo Square: Friendship (three women become friends after they discover they were all dating the same man) I was debating between using this one for Money! or Friendship but realized I had a few other decent choices for Money! among both books to be reviewed and books to be read so Friendship it is! Samiah Brooks is successful in her career, she owns her own home, and she has a killer wardrobe. The one thing missing on her check list – the guy! The most […]
