Bright Lights, Bay City

I went back and forth on whether to use this as “The Book Was Better” because while Netflix did turn it into a series I hadn’t watched it. Then, while it was dumping rain over the long weekend, I actually watched the series, so that assuaged my guilt and now I can write this review with a clear conscience. So. Altered Carbon. I gave this book three stars, but I honestly went back and forth on that for a while. I decided to give it […]

The Book Was Better (but the film was still excellent)

November 27, 2018 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

cbr10bingo The Book Was Better The novel Mudbound was a Pen America Literary Award winner and was turned into an award winning film starring Mary J. Blige. It’s a powerful and tragic story about land, love, friendship and racism in post-WWII Mississippi, told from multiple points of view. Both the novel and the film are excellent, but I must give the nod to the original novel as being better. The novel (and film) open with brothers Henry and Jamie McAllen burying their Pap while Henry’s […]

I mean, it WAS

November 26, 2018 by octothorp 2 Comments

So yes, my bingo square for “The Book Was Better” was indeed filled by a better book than a movie, but I tried to make it the fairest fight in the Harry Potter series; I wonder how much better the movies would have been with Alfonso Cuaron behind the camera for all of them. The filmed sequences that stood out for me were Buckbeak’s execution, the first appearance of the Dementors, and the staging of the adventures with the Time Turner, but honestly, this is […]

The Movie Was Better

November 14, 2018 by Debcapsfan 5 Comments

BINGO! Cannonballer Says, Listicles, Cannonbookclub, The Book Was Better?, Home, Something Home (Yay, I did it!) When my husband suggested we go see Crazy Rich Asians, a movie he had heard profiled on NPR, I just about fell out of my chair. We don’t go to the movies together. I think the last one we saw in the theatre together was XMen 3, which came out in 2006. So off we went, and we really loved it. It was funny, and warm, and charming, and […]

When that ticking clock does more than keep you up at night….

November 1, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It seems appropriate that I finished my cbr10bingo for #The Book Was Better? on Halloween as it was a scary(ish) book called The House with a Clock in Its Walls by John Bellairs. I think I read this as a kid about thirty years ago. This is probably why I have no real memory of it. Therefore, I was reading it for the first time. I had hoped to read it as the movie just came out. And while I am not a Jack Black fan, […]

Emma Thompson is a goddess and should always be treated as such. Oh, and BINGO.

October 30, 2018 by scootsa1000 4 Comments

I’ve read Emma a few times before, and have read several re-imaginings and retellings as well. I’ve seen at least four adaptations (Mark Strong as Mr. Knightley…Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightely…the web series made by the folks who did The Lizzie Bennett Diaries…and of course, the GOOP version), and always thought I preferred the movie to the book. I mean, come on. Jeremy Northam gave so much beautiful side-eye to Goop in that movie. And then, low and behold, Audible gifted me with the Emma […]
