“The world feels safer somehow if we share our pain. It becomes more manageable. And by sharing our pain, we inspire others to share theirs. We are so much less alone if learn to wear our imperfections proudly, like tarnished jewelry that still shines just as brightly.”

Broken (in the best possible way) by Jenny Lawson

May 30, 2021 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

Reading about loss, grief, and love in Harrow: The Ninth  while grieving the loss of my dog was perhaps not the best choice.  After reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for Cannonball Book Club, it seemed best to keep the comedy going and The Bloggess’s Broken (in the best possible way) was sitting on the shelf waiting.  I  thought I knew what I would be getting in a Jenny Lawson book.  Raw openness about her mental and physical health, along with side splittingly funny stories.  […]

“Normal is boring. Weird is better. Goats are awesome, but only in small quantities.”

February 15, 2017 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I am not 100% sure how to rate or review this book so prepare yourselves for a bit of a ramble. I also don’t know why I decided to read Jenny Lawson’s second book before her first, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. But, I had added Furiously Happy to my to read list, someone suggested the author narrated version since it has a bonus chapter, I have an audible subscription, and here we are. I have depression, and usually I keep it on the ropes […]

Let Your Freak Flag Fly

October 23, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I had high hopes to finish this review yesterday, but I had one of my “bad days”, which is fitting in a totally weird, Bloggess way.  My bad days are the days where my depression and anxiety win and my emotions take a fun ride to Overwhelming Sadness Valley, Rage Inducing Irritability Town and Petrified by Intrusive Thoughts Commonwealth.  I am cursed with dysthymia, which is a.) a genus of moth, b.) a form of chronic depression (but ONLY MILD depression, if you are judgy Google) and […]

“‘And then Adam was like, “Who’s Jesus?” and God said, “No one yet. It’s just an idea I’m throwing around.”‘

I admire Jenny Lawson so much, even more now that I’ve read this book. She’s frequently very open on her blog about her mental illness, but she’s never been this open before. It must have taken a great deal of courage to talk so freely about such personal things. Then again, maybe it didn’t. Jenny herself admits in the book there’s a kind of freedom that you can only achieve once you stop caring what other people think and truly accept yourself, flaws and all. […]

“Winner: Everyone who isn’t my editor.”

October 8, 2015 by TylerDFC 2 Comments

A review is really unnecessary here. Just go buy/check out/borrow/steal Furiously Happy and get to reading. It is incredibly funny, incredibly moving, and really, really, REALLY funny. Did I mention it was funny? Because it’s really funny. This isn’t enough to make word quota is it? Do we have a word quota on the CBR blog? I should probably check in to that. No, I’m not just typing to fill out word space. How dare you, good sir or madam. If I had a white […]

Sometimes We Fly

October 7, 2015 by ModernLove 1 Comment

There are books that make you laugh out loud (or, in my case, bite my lip to try and silence my laughter at work) and there are books that make you cry ears of genuine understanding and relief and thanks that you’re not the only one. Jenny Lawson writes books that do both. And they speak to you. It’s like she’s crawling around my head, listening to my thoughts and spitting them back at me, which is good and bad. It’s good with the hilarious stuff […]
