A surprisingly earnest (and not surprisingly literal) exploration of the Bible.

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs

March 1, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Feels good to finally knock this off my TBR after 13 years, and it was a pretty good read, but I think I wanted more from it. This mindset is puzzling, because I was actually expecting less than what I got here. I was expecting this to be more of a satirical, humorous, critical exploration of the Bible. And it was not that! At all! Jacobs is extremely, beyond-call sincere in his exploration. He’s funny, but the humor is secondary. His quest comes first. (He […]

A Pattykates Christmas

Luke 2:1-20 by God Almighty

December 12, 2020 by katie71483 4 Comments

Katie: Happy Holidays, dear readers! Today I’m coming to you solo with a special edition of our Bible Series: The Nativity Story. That’s right, today we’re going to be talking about Luke 2:1-20. Luke 2:1-3: In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register. Luke 2:4-7: So Joseph also went […]

Hallmark After Dark!

Esther: Royal Beauty by Angela Hunt

December 19, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This book was recently on one of the Amazon daily deals lists, so I bookmarked it for future reading and gave it a go. It seemed like an interesting mix of religious romance (think Hallmark), historical fiction, and a mashup of Jewish and Persian culture. It was pretty much all of those things! If you look up the book on Amazon or Goodreads you can see it’s in the three-part “Dangerous Beauty” series also featuring Delilah (of Samson fame) and Bathsheba (of David killing her […]

What would Jesus do?

Good News Bible (New Testament) by God/ Anonymous

April 16, 2019 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

This is my companion review to my earlier review of the Old Testament, and, as I was reminded by the Cannonball overlords, a timely read given that Easter is coming up this weekend (happy end of Lent to the righteous, happy long weekend to the rest of us heathens!). As a basic overview for those who have been putting off their Bible studies, the New Testament (or at least the Good News Bible version) is roughly 330 pages which are divided into 27 chapters, or […]

The original Book

The Good News Bible by God/ Anonymous

April 2, 2019 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

It feels very wrong to write a book review of The Bible, but it would also feel wrong to not get the Cannonball Reads credit for reading it- so here we are!  I’m splitting this review into two, one review for the Old Testament and one review for the New Testament- not only does this make sense thematically, but this way I also get double the book reading credit!  Although my hesitations in writing this review are also many, I’m also hopeful that God, if […]

Genesis Part VII - Chapters 26-30 by 6000 years of male privelege

April 2, 2018 by PattyKates 4 Comments

Previously on Supernatural… Sarah’s death, Abraham’s death, Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah: the best little camel waterer in Texas, and sibling rivalry, as per the usual. In this installment… Patty: There was a severe famine so Isaac hightailed it to Gerar. God told him to stay put and not to go to Egypt and that if he obeyed, he would be rewarded with God’s standard offer of blessings and descendants. Now, stop me if you’ve heard this one but Isaac tells everyone in town that Rebekah […]
