A Tessa Dare book with reformed pirates!

April 24, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

I call this one a solid 3.5 stars. It started out really strong for me, and finished slightly less so for reasons I can’t put a finger on, but I’ll get into nitty-gritties after a quick plot summary from Goodreads: “Desperate to escape a loveless marriage and society’s constraints, pampered heiress Sophia Hathaway jilts her groom, packs up her paints and sketchbook, and assumes a new identity, posing as a governess to secure passage on the Aphrodite. She wants a life of her own: unsheltered, […]

Meh.

This was okay. Not a bad way to spend an hour, but I think I wanted a different story than it ended up giving me. I just never connected with the characters after I realized it was going to be a different story than I thought it would be after reading the first three pages. Here’s how it starts. Violet is a wallflower at a ball on Christmas Eve, when in comes a seriously injured man fresh from being shipwrecked or something. He’s speaking some […]

Sticky, sweet, all-consuming fluff.

Tessa Dare is just a gem. I was very slightly underwhelmed by her Stud Club series, having preferred the more recent books of hers that I’ve read, but here I am back at her first novel, and I feel like it’s a perfect representation of what readers should expect from her current oeuvre. Goddess of the Hunt has several delicious — if implausible — romantic encounters, a tomboy heroine, an Unfortunate Misunderstanding, and a really entertaining side plot that sets up the next book in the most […]

This is all Malin’s fault.

If you’ll recall from my previous review of Tessa Dare’s A Week to Be Wicked, I mentioned that I would probably be going on a Tessa Dare binge pretty quickly. This is the beginning of that. This one came in from the library yesterday, and I bought two others at Bookmans three hours ago. So this is happening. Dammit. I didn’t like this one as much as A Week to Be Wicked, which is the second book in the Spindle Cove series. A Night to […]

“Someone wants to kill you? Well, I want to make love to you… With two such compelling alternatives, however will you choose?”

I’ve gotta hand it to Tessa Dare: I was not really sure how I was going to end up liking Julian Bellamy. In the first two books in the Stud Club trilogy, he’s very much that annoying friend in your group that you kind of put up with because he’s always been around, but you don’t really like him all that much. He’s whiny and has the worst case of tunnel-vision about the murder of his friend Leo — blinded by guilt and remorse, he […]

“What is the world coming to, with these modern women? A man can’t tell them what to do.”

March 24, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 15 Comments

So far, I’m enjoying the ludicrously named Stud Club trilogy, but at the same time I can tell that they are earlier works from an author whose later titles, I feel, are more indicative of her talent. The second entry into the trilogy follows the VERY tortured Rhys St. Maur, Lord Ashworth, a war hero and broody dude who is a closet romantic and wants nothing more than to start over and create, rather than destroy, back at his ancestral home. His love interest is Meredith Maddox, […]
