I see now what everyone meant about latter Pratchett.

March 26, 2017 by narfna 3 Comments

“It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I’m one of Us. I must be. I’ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We’re always one of Us. It’s Them that do the bad things.” Jingo is an anti-war book in […]

Douglas Adams, Terry Gilliam, and Martin Freeman walk into a bar….

February 24, 2017 by ingres77 7 Comments

I have long wanted to read this, but the sheer number of volumes in the series was intimidating. I started it last year (or the year before) but was put off by the incessant silliness of it all. Which isn’t to say I don’t appreciate silliness, but I do have to be in the mood for it. And to that point, Terry Pratchett’s voice is unmistakable, here. It is equal parts Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Terry Gilliam, with a splash of bumbling charm that Martin […]

My favorite not my favorite

January 29, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite authors of all time. I’ve read the Discworld series in its entirety and several of Pratchett’s other works as well. When he passed away in March 2015, the literary world lost one of the contemporary greats, but it seems he left a lot of unpublished things or just works in progress or to be collected. I was looking forward to Dragon’s at Crumbling Castle and Other Stories, which is a collection of juvenalia fiction. Some of the stories […]

An emotional but worthwhile journey

December 13, 2016 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

There was much less sobbing than I expected, even considering what happens right at the beginning of the book (no spoilers). I am mad at the universe for taking Pratchett from us so soon (especially since I’ve been rereading Douglas Adams and I’m mad about that all over again), but I knew Pratchett wouldn’t let me down. His final Discworld book checks back in with Tiffany Aching, teenage witch and all-around badass. The elves are trying to break out of fairyland and wreak havoc in […]

For You Have Left the World Better than You Found it.

October 10, 2016 by AkBeagle Leave a Comment

Ok let’s do this.  After avoiding the end for as long as I could, I finally read the last book by my favorite author of all time, Terry Pratchett.  Terry is a good guy to have as a favorite.  His books are witty and charming, full of reappearing characters and, unlike some fantasy writers (I’m looking at you GRRM), appearing at regular intervals.  Now he is gone.  Taken too soon by the thief of time, Alzheimer’s Disease. The Shepherd’s Crown was released way back in […]

Back in Black

October 10, 2016 by AkBeagle Leave a Comment

I must confess that this a re-read of this book, but I honestly couldn’t remember much about the plot.  Terry Pratchett is my comfort food.  I can reread his books over and over and still be entertained and gain deeper understanding of the author and the characters he has created.  I have been reluctant to read the final book in this series as it is final book by the author who died last year from Alzheimer’s Disease. So I procrastinated by re-reading I Shall Wear […]
