Go for the throat.

June 5, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

I was in just exactly the right mood for this. And this was just exactly the right balance of satire, genuine laugh out loud humor, and sneaky pathos that I prefer in my Discworld books. But, hey, is this really the last of the Witches books? Are they in the Tiffany Aching ones? I’m gonna miss these ladies. (Even Magrat. And hey, she’s not too bad now that she’s a mother. Much more forceful, and less of a limp dishrag.) Firstly, this is a clever […]

Double Double Toil and Trouble

May 14, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

First off, I enjoyed this one much more than Equal Rites.  While this novel still doesn’t necessarily make me want to go out and read everything Pratchett has ever written, I have added him to my list of fall back authors for when I need a book and have no ideas on what to get.  I think the main thing is that sometimes he just drags out jokes/premises a bit longer than they really need to go. Maybe that’s just a sign that I read […]

A Decent Enough Introduction

May 6, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

As much as people talk about Terry Pratchett, I have never actually read any of his novels. Part of it is just that there is such a large back catalog so I wasn’t sure where to begin. I also think an ex of mine liked him a lot which may have made me a bit hesitant for a while.  As much love as Pratchett inspires, though, I decided it was finally time to read him, and I asked for advice in the Facebook group. I […]

When does this get un-sad?

February 21, 2018 by Bothari43 3 Comments

I miss the days when a Pratchett book was just a Pratchett book – brilliant and wonderful and funny and sharp and thought-provoking. Now, rereading A Hat Full of Sky, it’s all those things, but now there’s this overlay of SAD. Sad that we don’t get to see Tiffany Aching grow up. Sad about what happens to Granny Weatherwax. Heartbroken and furious at the universe for what happened to Sir Terry. SIGH. But if you let the Nac Mac Feegle chase away the sad for […]

Ineffable

February 5, 2018 by octothorp 3 Comments

Ive been trying to read down the pile of unread books in my library, and this necessitated eating my literary vegetables, so to speak – the stuff that’s not fun or that I’ve put off for one reason or another until I forgot why I bought the damn thing to begin with – some of which weren’t even nutritious, to torture the metaphor. It was cake time, muffukkas. This was my eleventy billionth reading of this book and it never fails to make me smile. […]

Mmmmm, syrup

January 26, 2018 by alphabootoo 1 Comment

“When light encounters a strong magical field it loses all sense of urgency.  It slows right down.  And on the Discworld the magic was embarrassingly strong, which meant that the soft yellow light of dawn flowed over the sleeping landscape like the caress of a gentle lover or, as some would have it, like golden syrup.” Pratchett describes the sunlight of Discworld as flowing like golden syrup several times during The Light Fantastic, which meant I spent a fair amount of the time that I […]
