Not the most Pratchetty of Pratchetts, but solid

Eric by Terry Pratchett

November 14, 2019 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

A friend recommended the podcast Myths & Legends, and I chose to start with the two-part episode on Faust and Mephistopheles, because I have a sculpture of those two that I absolutely love (pictured). The episode was great, and inspired me to reread Pratchett’s Eric, which has barely anything to do with the Faust story, but is still a damn fun ride. Eric is a horny teen gothling, trying to summon a demon to grant him all his wishes. Rincewind is a terrible wizard (in that […]

CBR11Bingo: The Collection & Reader’s Choice — BLACKOUT!

A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction by Terry Pratchett

Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land

Woohoo! I’ve got a blackout board and I’m almost completely caught up on reviews (10 left after this one). A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction by Terry Pratchett I don’t normally read or really enjoy short stories, so this is definitely a good example of Bingo making us broaden our horizons! I found this short story collection by searching “collection” on Overdrive. I had thought I might reread some Stephen King or Neil Gaimen short stories, but when I saw this Terry Prachett […]

“Where do you get coins like that?” “In Pairs.” (double bingo, Two heads are better than one)

Mort by Terry Pratchett

Despite having read The Color of Magic my first day of college, adoring Good Omens, and in general living up to every nerd stereotype, I never got into the Discworld series. So for my dual review, I asked my husband, a major Discworld fan, to recommend a good entry point and discuss the book with me. Apparently much of the internet agrees with the octospouse that this is a good one to start on, and while I did enjoy it, it may have been a […]

Where you found the real McCoy, the real grace and the real heart-stopping evil, was right inside the human mind.

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

CBR11bingo: Reading the TBR BINGO, Four corners plus center square: Remix, Reading the TBR, Summer Read, Cannonballer Says, Own Voices I think my favorite thing about CBR bingo is that it motivates me to go the library and borrow the books that have been languishing on my TBR list. Good Omens is yet another in the long registry of “Why the hell (ahem) did I wait so long to read this book?” It seems improbable that this novel could be floating around the periphery of […]

“What can the harvest hope for, if not for the care of the Reaper Man?”

Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett

Times up for death. He’s been handed his notice and he now has a little hourglass counting down the days till he will go. So he does what anyone might do, he quits his job and decides to go traveling. He travels exactly to where miss Flitworth needs a farmhand on her lonely farm. So he becomes a harvester. Meanwhile all the life that was supposed to run out, lingers on in the world causing all sorts of problems; especially for one Windle Poons who […]

“The thing is, I mean, there’s times when you look at the universe and you think, ‘What about me?’ and you can just hear the universe replying, ‘Well, what about you?'”

Thief of Time (Discworld, #26) by Terry Pratchett

June 24, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

There wasn’t enough Death in this, but then again, he’s done all his growing already in other books, so that was probably the smart choice. I still really enjoyed it. The actual main characters of this book are Death’s granddaughter, Susan, who has reached the ultimate peak of her badassdom; a history monk named Lu-Tze; and his apprentice, Lobsang. The history monks are cool. They live in this place where Time doesn’t really exist, and their job is to basically monitor history, and in a […]
