Lizzy and the Cloud

Lizzy and the Cloud by Terry Fan and Eric Fan

December 20, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lizzy and the Cloud is written and illustrated by Terry Fan and Eric Fan. They are a couple of odd ducks to start with. Talented as heck, but sometimes I just do not “get them.”  They create stories that seem simple on the surface but are deeper. I am going to say there are a combination of themes in Lizzy and the Cloud which include love, taking care of pets, taking care of yourself, friendships, and death. Lizzy is a young girl who wants to […]

A loving bond grows between the two unlikely friends

The Scarecrow. by Beth Ferray

September 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Erin and Terry Fan are at it again with their lovely illustrations in The Scarecrow. These works of art are the right colors, tone and filled with details that fit the theme and feel of the story. And while the story is a tad too sugary (in parts) for me, the illustrations help calm that effect.     With that said, Beth Ferry created a lovely book about love, friendship and possibly you could even say that it is a little bit about adoption as […]

You Know the Brothers Grimm now meet the Brothers Fan

July 23, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Fan Brothers are at it again. Terry and Eric Fan have created a book dealing with loss; the loss of a beloved grandfather to be precise. On the day that would have been Finns grandfathers’ 90th birthday, he builds a (not so) seaworthy ship to sail as he and his grandfather wished to do. And as the stories of his grandfather told about. But building a ship is a lot of work and Finn grows sleepy and falling fast asleep below deck. It is […]

Ships Ahoy!

May 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Antlered Ship is a bizarre little book. I have to say, while I do not hate it, I have done multiple reads on it and still am not truly sure what I think about it. The most interesting part of the book is the fantasticalness of it, but it hints at the realism of animals. A fox sets off on a seafaring voyage with the crew being deer and pigeons. One meat eater on the ship does make cause for worry by this reader. […]
