“When we’re mindful, we notice sooner when we’re barreling into mental “time travel.” We come back to what’s in front of us, which otherwise may not get much attention at all. We recognize when thoughts make a challenging situation even more challenging.”

Mindfulness and Self-Compassion for Teen ADHD: Build Executive Functioning Skills, Increase Motivation, and Improve Self-Confidence by Mark Bertin and Karen Bluth

December 31, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Beginning this review has been more challenging than I anticipated because I find myself stumbling over language. There is a lot of misunderstanding and stigma around ADHD. I don’t like calling it a “condition” and I certainly don’t want to call it a “disorder” because that supposes that there is a “right” way to be and exist. In our society, we have lumped brains into “neurotypical” and “neuroatypical” categories, and ADHD drops you into the “neuroatypical” box. Having a diagnosis for my kiddo has enabled […]

Teen Killers Club (volume one) by Lily Sparks

December 6, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Both predictable and a few surprises, Teen Killers Club (volume one) has a few bumps and bruises and some killings. Okay, a lot of killing. The overall of this novel I enjoyed, however, there were several parts I did not. The biggest two were Signal (our innocent member of this summer camp from heck) is a major Damsel in Distress and she thinks she can change people just by loving them. Even murderers who really like their “hobby.”  There are several heavy-handed plot points, some […]

A teen goes missing… years later the truth comes out

Open House: A Novel by Katie Sise

June 13, 2023 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

Ooh I liked this one. It’s a common theme in the thriller or suspense genre. Something happens to a teen. Years or decades pass. Something brings the people surrounding the event back together. The truth comes out slowly. More people die! I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I love it. I’ve read a bunch of books with that similar theme, but I’ve liked them all. Our main character is Haley, and the missing/murdered teen was her sister Emma. Haley leaves for a while to […]

Naomi Season One (TV Tie-In by Brian Michael Bendis

June 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am glad I was not the only one who was not completely taken with this graphic novel. The Goodreads reviews were averaging two and three for scores. Naomi Season One has almost nothing original to it. It was created to have representation of a person of color as the main character. It is filled with clichés, and steals Superman’s origin story (alien from another world, left on Earth). Naomi even learns of her alien heritage in a cave. Her white adoptive parents are typical, […]

It All Comes Back to You by Farah Naz Rishi

September 6, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Last year, during our The Future is Queer book club event, we were introduced to the sweet and complicated world of Farah Naz Rishi with her debut novel, I Hope You Get This Message. She returns next week with a decidedly different but still warmly familiar follow up: It All Comes Back to You. IHYGTM sits firmly on the edge of an apocalypse; aliens have made contact with Earth and time is quickly slipping away. It All Comes Back to You is firmly planted in another […]

Ponyboy is Still Gold

The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

May 6, 2021 by LanierHgts 5 Comments

I first read this book when I was a teen and remember liking it. At the time I probably liked the movie more because it starred many of the teen-crush pack. I also remember being particularly struck that S.E. Hinton had to use her initials to publish so that people would not know she was a woman and discount her work. I came across this book again in a box of books I have been saving for my kids for when they became a bit […]
