To Build or Not to…. Nah! Just to Build!

In Made by Maxine by Ruth Spiro

Builder Brothers: Big Plans by Jonathan and Drew Scott

June 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In reverse alphabetical order, this review covers two different books about building, about trying and not giving up. In Made by Maxine by Ruth Spiro, we see our heroine trying to figure out how to make things bigger and better. When she gets a pet fish (who she thinks is waving at her), she builds it the biggest, funniest, craziest fish tank as the bowl she had for him was just too dull. And how proud both are of it! That is until the class […]

My first DNF in years

Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science - and the World by Rachel Swaby

June 21, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

From Goodreads: Fifty-two inspiring and insightful profiles of history’s brightest female scientists. In 2013, the New York Times published an obituary for Yvonne Brill. It began: “She made a mean beef stroganoff, followed her husband from job to job, and took eight years off from work to raise three children.” It wasn’t until the second paragraph that readers discovered why the Times had devoted several hundred words to her life: Brill was a brilliant rocket scientist who invented a propulsion system to keep communications satellites […]

Lets get twisted with Ada Twist

Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants by Andrea Beaty

May 23, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants is a continuing of the picture book series Andrea Beaty and David Roberts started with Iggy Peck, Architect, and Rosie Revere, Engineer and of course, Ada Twist, Scientist. And this chapter book is book two in The Questioneers series for the strong second to third grade reader. There are a few bumps for adult readers, but the age it is aimed at should love. Especially if they are into science, asking questions and funny friendship stories. Like her picture […]

Look up….all the way up….. and the stars will tell you a story about a curious boy

Look Up with Me: Neil deGrasse Tyson: A Life Among the Stars by Jenifer Berne

March 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not a fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson mostly because I am unfamiliar with his work (and I have heard rumors about a less-than-friendly personality). However, putting aside any bias I might have, I tackled Look Up with Me: Neil deGrasse Tyson: A Life Among the Stars as if it was any other book. After all, Jenifer Berne’s book did not interest me because of the subject, but because of Lorraine Nam’s illustrations. Paper artist Lorraine Nam’s cover is fascinating. The bold color of […]

What IS the internet, anyway?

April 1, 2018 by Halbs 2 Comments

AMC’s computer tech/hot people drama “Halt and Catch Fire” is set in the 1980s and 1990s. It’s a great drama, and also set in the fascinating and generally not seen subgenre of period-piece computer tech. The soundtracks alone make the show worth watching. I love that show, and its iconic line: “Computers aren’t the thing. They’re the thing that gets you to the thing.” I’ve been online for about 25 years, and the gutsin that quote resonated deeply with me. As an artsy, quiet kid, […]

Patent Wars

March 9, 2018 by Ale Leave a Comment

I really wanted to like this book, and there were definitely some great moments in it with visceral setting and interesting factoids, but it all fell a bit flat for me. “The Last Days of Night” is a fictional retelling of the patent wars between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse during the hey-day of America’s invention period. Moore chooses to tell this story from the Point of View of Westinghouse’s lawyer, Paul Cravath. It’s an ingenious way to tell a story riddled with scientific specifics and […]
