“Sometimes reality comes crashing down on you. Other times reality simply waits, patiently, for you to run out of the energy it takes to deny it.”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

April 22, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

The first Taylor Jenkins Reid book I consumed was Daisy Jones and the Six, as nudged by the Reese Witherspoon book club. I listened to the audio, and it was an amazing ride: with a star-studded cast (Judy Greer! Benjamin Bratt!). It felt like listening to an episode of Vh1 Behind the Music, and I greedily lapped up every second of it. My next TJR was Carrie Soto is Back, her latest book, published in 2022. This time around, Carrie Soto is the retired GOAT […]

A Moving Portrait of a Complicated Character

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

February 28, 2023 by krisbholland Leave a Comment

I was starting to feel like the only person I knew who hadn’t read Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Scrolling through my Libby wishlist, I saw this at the top – and it was available! I checked it out and immediately sat down to see what all the fuss was about. The book is narrated by Monique Grant, a talented but underutilized writer at a magazine. The magazine receives notice that aging megastar Evelyn Hugo would like to tell her life story […]

The Bitch is Back

Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

January 8, 2023 by Carriejay 6 Comments

Once the best tennis player in the world, Carrie Soto smashed records and claimed Grand Slam titles, but when her knee began giving her trouble, she retired, leaving it all behind. Or so she thought. Now there’s a new phenom on the court, Nicki Chan. She’s coming for Carrie’s record, so Carrie decides to come out of retirement to defend her title. She’s 37 years old, and if she wins she’ll be the oldest player do to so. But her body isn’t quite what it […]

“Falling in love is really quite simple. You want to know the secret? It’s the same thing we are doing about life every single day. Forget there’s an ending.”

Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Reading, or listening to, the Taylor Jenkins Reid book “Daisy Jones and the Six” was one of my favorite reads of 2020; I still herald it whenever someone is looking for an audiobook, or a book, to completely fall into. Reid has the ability to write fiction so realistically that you forget that what you are reading isn’t the most engaging memoir of all time, but fiction. That was true about Daisy Jones and it’s true about this book. In Carrie Soto, Reid has rewritten […]

How many husbands might be too many?

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

December 29, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017) by Taylor Jenkins Reid is our most recent choice for book club. I have to admit, I wasn’t super excited by the title, cover, or blurb. I’m only a little bit interested in goings-on of Hollywood, and the novel looked a little soap opera-y to me. Fortunately, it was better than I expected! I found Evelyn to be an interesting character who had no qualms in going after whatever she wanted. The story kept me reading, and her husbands […]

I adored this book, but also wanted to throw it at the wall

Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

How is it possible for me to have loved and hated this so, so much?  I’m utterly satisfied by the resolution, but at the same time, I want to throw it at the sliding glass door in the dining room. I’ve got a list of things that have never happened in tennis – the Aus open at Christmas?  “The game is Soto’s.”  Argh!  How has TJR researched what it’s like to play tennis well enough to be totally viscerally realistic, at the exact same time […]
