CBR Bingo: Not My Wheelhouse, I Love This and Reader’s Choice

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

October 23, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

CBR 11 Bingo- Not My Wheelhouse 99 Percent Mine – Sally Thorne I chose a romance novel, Thorne’s The Hating Game, for last year’s Not My Wheelhouse and while I enjoyed it the romance genre floodgates were not opened for me so I chose another kissing book for the same square this year. Darcy Barrett and her twin brother, Jamie, inherited their grandmother’s tear-down of a cottage which has caused some estrangement between the siblings. Their childhood best friend, Tom, has been hired as the contractor […]

“Heartbreak is a loss. Divorce is a piece of paper.”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

October 10, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, Taylor Jenkins Reid published Daisy Jones and the Six, which has generally been very well received critically and keeps popping up on “Must read” lists. In several review of that book, I saw this, Jenkins Reid’s previous release, from 2017, highly recommended. Several people who were so-so on Daisy Jones and the Six claimed to prefer The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and as movie stars seemed more intriguing to me than rock stars, I decided to give it a try. There are multiple narratives in […]

A merely OK book made much better by the voice cast

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

September 29, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

From Goodreads: Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now. Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice […]

And maybe that’s ok.

Maybe in Another LIfe by Taylor Jenkins Reid

September 22, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Another Taylor Jenkins Reid novel, and I’ve started seeing some cracks in the formula. One thing that Reid likes in her novels are those irrevocable choices and how they might split narratives based on which path was taken. This book takes that idea and runs with it. Hannah is back in town, recently out of a relationship with a married man, and testing the waters on her second night with her high school boyfriend. The novel splits on two fronts: she goes with him or […]

But no one else seemed to want to vomit around her.

One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid

September 21, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid finds our narrator and protagonist in entirely unique, but oddly familiar situation. As in After I Do, we find our narrator facing down the most important decision of her life. After years and years of love and marriage, she has to decide whether or not the things she once wanted are what she still wants, now asked to decide again, in her her thirties. That’s the familiar part. The unique part is that Emma is engaged to Sam, who […]

After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid

August 31, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

A very solid and entertaining novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, of Daisy Jones and the Six recent acclaim. This novel is about a married couple, eleven years into their relationship having met in college, and about 5 or 6 years into their marriage, in a rut. The novel begins with a fight or tense dispute in the Dodgers parking lot that leads to eventual breakdown in their communication and their trust for one another. But the novel takes a long detour into the full body […]
