Obama knew what he was talking about.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

June 18, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This book has been on my radar for a while for a number of reasons, one of which being that President Obama listed it on his summer reading list in 2018. (Remember when presidents would share their summer reading lists? George W. Bush had a hefty reading habit as well. The current administration hasn’t shared one. So there’s that). I’m going to kick it over to President Obama’s one-sentence summary to get this review started. “An American Marriage by Tayari Jones is a moving portrayal of […]

How Do You Keep It Going?

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

February 17, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who enjoy stories told from multiple perspectives. In a nutshell: Roy Jr and his wife Celestial have been married for a year and a half and are visiting his folks when a chance encounter at a hotel leads to a woman falsely accusing him of rape. He is convicted and sent away. This is the story of what happens next. Worth quoting: “Is motherhood really optional when you’re a perfectly normal woman married to a perfectly normal man?” (This isn’t a huge […]

Much of life is timing and circumstance

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

December 13, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I first found An American Marriage (2018) by Tayari Jones on NPR’s Best Books of 2018 List. It was also an Oprah’s book club selection. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised at the readability and relatability of this story. I read this quite a while ago, but I still remember the characters and their lives very clearly. Roy and Celestial have been married for a year and a half. The two love each other, but their relationship has always had some heat […]

Personal tragedy speaking to societal tragedy

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

February 19, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

This book has been well read, well reviewed, and on every list for a reason – it is very very good. It is a beautifully written, horrifyingly tragic story that speaks as much about America as it does about the marriage at the novel’s core. It is stunning and it is sad. The short version is, a young couple, only married a year, are visiting his parents in small town Louisiana when the husband is arrested, tried, and convicted of a crime he absolutely did […]

Reminded me of “If Beale Street Could Talk” Though I Didn’t Like the Main Characters

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

February 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well I went into this expecting a compelling read. It was that at times. I think the biggest reason why I just didn’t get into this story that much was that the story should have stayed between Roy and Celestial. Adding Andre actually took away from both of them. And having the narrative go to their letters to each other was a bit hard to get into since the rhythm was off. Except for a few clues here and there you are pretty unaware of […]

No Danger of a Simple Story

December 18, 2018 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

Like many books that I pick up, An American Marriage by Tayari Jones ended up on my to-read list after I heard a story on NPR.  Interviewed by Karen Grigsby-Bates last February, Jones said she had done a lot of research on criminal justice and race to prepare to write a book but that nothing was clicking until she went home to visit her mom over the holidays and overheard a conversation in an Atlanta mall: JONES: The woman was beautifully dressed, and the young man, he […]
