Triple Cannonballing with Tana French

December 28, 2016 by narfna 23 Comments

It’s almost ridiculous how easy she makes it look, writing a book this good. I don’t even know what to say anymore about her books. They are all just so, so good. And the way she jumps from character to character each book gives her room to play around with different structures and themes, and yet still stay within the framework of a murder mystery novel. I love murder mystery novels, but I don’t love these books because of the mysteries (although I don’t think […]

There’s truth that lives, and truth that dies I don’t know which, so never mind

In the Woods is dark, complex and twisty but not in a gimmicky sort of way. It is the murder mystery I have been waiting for and I have already added the second and third books in Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series to my TBR list. It’s a mystery novel that is more than simply a “whodunnit.” It’s a rumination on memory and friendship with a conclusion that is an emotional kick in the gut. In 1985, three children disappeared into the woods […]

“Dependably good” doesn’t sound like high enough praise, but it’s meant to be

November 4, 2016 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

I love starting a book I know is going to be good, and Tana French has quickly become one of those authors who send me tripping home from the library in gleeful anticipation. I think The Likeness has been my favorite so far, but I was in a lazy zone then and didn’t review that one. Oops. This one was good too, but seemed even darker. Frank Mackey is a detective in the undercover department (that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean). When […]

Tana French can do no wrong

November 3, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Tana French & Sophie Hannah are linked in my mind — I started reading their series (both starring murder detectives and lots of twisty twists) around the same time, and I’m pretty sure I found one because the other recommended her. But while Sophie Hannah’s books have been a little…lacking lately, I feel like French’s just keep getting better and better. “I live inside my own skin. Anything that happens outside it doesn’t change who I am. This isn’t something I’m proud of; as far as […]

Can’t believe I almost skipped this one

September 25, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

This book really surprised me. I loved The Likeness, but detective Frank Mackey was NOT a favorite character. I really considered skipping this one and moving on to book four of the series. I’m so glad I resisted temptation because Faithful Place ended up being my favorite so far. As with all her novels (at least the ones I’ve read!), French is just as interested in the characters and how they cope with events as she is in the mystery itself. Frank grew up poor […]

Though virtue is not a word I’d apply to this situation

June 27, 2016 by baxlala 3 Comments

Guys. This book was super depressing. I read it fairly quickly, but it was gloomy and I was already feeling sort of gloomy so I’m not sure I really enjoyed it. It was, however, that it was well-written and engaging. I just don’t know that I’ll read more. The world is bleak enough without spending my leisure time depressing the hell out of myself. This novel is a compelling murder mystery with great characters, and I found myself growing more and more invested in solving […]
